Hi All,

Admin: If I have posted in the wrong place I'm sorry, please move my post to the best place

I'm new here, I live in Austria where I am the manager of a brewery :whistle:, well someone has to do it !!

My question is, has anyone got any experiance of producing any products from their excess yeast?

I'm thinking of things like "Marmite", face creams, dried yeast (to sell as a health product) etc, etc ?? Any information on processes would be great!

It seems a waste to just flush all that yeast ... and it could be a potential extra income ;)

Do you not have pig farmers in austria?

Most pig farmers feed their animals waste yeast here in the uk, therefore sell it as animal feed.

Marmite will be a difficult one for you as it needs some serious equipment to make it, not fully sure of the process but I THINK it goes through several centrifuges.

Yes we have LOTS of farmers here but I'm guessing that they'd pay a few cents / ltr for yeast if they saw it as a "waste" product whereas if I can convert it into a more saleable product then I can ask top dollar ;)

I thought a "Marmite" like product would be good because (from a few simple Google searches) it seems that you basically get the yeast to undergo Autolysis by adding salt (although I think that strictly speaking it isn't true lysis) and presto some gunk comes out that you either love or hate !!

Additionally, "Brewer's Yeast" seems to be like a rash all over the web when it comes to skin creams (if you'll pardon the pun) ... So I thought: I have too much yeast, can I make it into a "desirable" product that can be sold at a premium ?? ... The problems started when I tried to find information about how to convert the wet, live yeast I have into a cream ...

All thoughts welcome ...

I think making marmite is quite a finite process, I belive the yeast is centrifuged several times, but not sure of the exact process as have never been into best foods, They also make bovril with yeast sludge now I think.

I have not come across brewers yeast skin creams, as of yet, I would imagine they just contain lots of vitimin E extracted from the yeast somehow.

The Usual method for removing the dry solids from the sludge is a centrifuge, or a dry cake filter press, both expensive pieces of equipment, Westfalia should be able to give you quotes on centrifuges but expect to pay plenty of euros.

as it has hop extracts in it as well and beer shampoo is already a brand I am sure it would be worth a punt. yeast with built in natural preservatives. sounds like a face pack to me :party:
 
cant you package it upand sell it to homebrewers in your country they are sure to pay for real brewers yeast
