I've just started culturing yeast, and have quickly realised that DME is an expensive way to feed them.

So I plan to just do a mash and freeze the wort in 2 litre bottles for use as yeast food.

What do the little beasties like to eat? 100% pale malt wort? A little crystal? Some Rye? Anything else that I might add to make them happy?

Just pale will be fine though I do use the some wort out of the mash tun. It doesn't have to be particularly high gravity 1020-30 is fine, make ithigher and the yeast could be stressed. :thumb:

I womder how they produce 9%ers then. :wha:
At the stage the yeast would be at when growing a starter you want the yeast to be in a growing faze but if you had a higher og then the yeast will change to making alcohol faze but it would be best if yeast stays in growing faze as that's what you want to happen when you pitch , now if you wanted a high abv beer then you would/should make a bigger starter or even a 2nd starter with the first
