AG brewer on my second year of learning the dark arts and an enjoyable process it has been.

For all my brews bar two "German beers used wlp3068 " ive used muntons dried yeast ,resulting brews imo very good.

However having used liquid yeast for my German beers ive always been interested in going down the wyeast liquid route for my british ales , would i notice a huge difference to my finished ales ?? here are few recent brews using Muntons results as ive said where dam good.

Hop Back Stout
Black Sheep Bitter
Caledonian Deuchars
80/-
Gales Festival Mild

What have my brews been missing ???

In my experience, yes. I've found most of the dry yeasts like S04, Muntons, Notty, etc to be fairly neutral. They let the malt and hops shine through but don't really provide a whole lot on their own.

I've tried a bunch of different Wyeast English yeasts and there are some very nice ones that provide a bit of fruit etc. It all really depends on what you are looking for in your beer. Try some out and see what you think!

Just as Baz says +1, nothing wrong with dried yeasts, and good to get started with them, but there is a lot more variety of liquid yeasts to give you different flavours and aromas, and different levels of attenuation.

totally agree with the above , for me its liquid all the way . Since i started using liquid i haven't use dried yeast anymore .

I suppose I was leaning towards Wyeast/White Labs route as part of the learning process.

I love Black Sheep & Caledonian and have brewed a few with dried yeast so my question would be what style of yeast would you use .If its the same yeast would I be able to wash the trub from the fv of the resulting brews and reuse as I did with 3068 ?? .

Thanks Guys

Will have a think and choose a yeast for my next brew Ringwood Old Thumper unless you wish to point me in the right direction.

Anyway may loose my cherry and post a brew day pics an all including yeast !!!!

well you could use a Ringwood yeast ;) Wyeast 1187 which is WLP005, also Brewlab do a huge range of yeasts on slants, they are very good, very helpful and they culture up your yeast for you so it is very fresh. http://www.brewlab.co.uk/analysisandresearch.asp#homebrew
