Hi all,

Can I just ask a little advice, I was going to brew a 'clansmans ale' from James Mortons recipe book, it asks for Edinburgh ale yeast which I bought and was going to brew on Friday. I thought it was a dry yeast packet but it is liquid yeast, now the problem is that I haven't got any DME to make a starter and i'm going to be pushed for time to make up some Wort between now and Friday.

So my question is, could I throw the liquid in, not make a starter and hope, or, I do have a pack of gervin yeast kicking around so should I use that? I've never made it before so I won't notice any difference in taste!

Thanks!

What's the production date on the yeast?

I'm pretty sure you are going to be happy with the liquid yeast, and that it is going to get the job done. Give it 48-72 hrs before considering adding anymore yeast.

Agreeing with all above: took some time to start but got to the end quite quickly, reached 1005 when 1012 was expected. Gonna mash a bit hotter next time .

You will probably get away with it just chucking it in, its not best practice but you should be fine.

You could get a jar of LME from a Holland and barrett and knock something together today if you have time although you may aswell just ditch it in if you're doing it tomorrow

Thanks to all those who replied, i pitched the yeast at about 21c on the friday afternoon and by saturday morning it was trying to escape out of the fv, i was on nights but the wife said she could hear the bubbling during the night and was too frightened to investigate! Fingers crossed!

Bottled the Clansmans Ale yesterday, ended up with 6.5l so ended up quite short but I expected that as there was an awful lot of trub picked up as I had trouble with the siphon. Had an FG of 1012 from 1070 so expecting 7.6% abv.
