afternoon...

My latest WOW (rgj/pomegranate) has been in thr primary for 2 weeks now, and is a new bucket I bought without a tap and with a hole bored in the lid and an airlock....

My other FV is a coopers job with a tap (for easy drawing off for hydrometer reading) and a loose fitting lid (no airlock required)

what's the best way to tell if my wow is ready to rock (rack 😃)... can I tell by the bubbles or is it still a case of drawing off some and measuring ? assuming it's the latter, what’s the best way of getting some wine out to measure ? turkey baster or something ? I did order a 100ml syringe from amazon but I think it's coming from china etc... so might have it for Christmas at this rate

I've got my own brewing turkey baster that I keep hidden away from actual cooking duties. I give it a few squirts through with boiling water to sterilise it before taking samples and I've never had a problem!

Turkey baster for me, rack n stabilise at around 1000 to 1004. My wife's not keen on wine too dry (990).
Not sure on airlock as sometimes don't use one, just loosen cap slightly on DJ(pet)

I still fire the hydrometer into the FV, not quite as accurate as you are looking down at it from an angle but its still going to be close enough for me, it means its only a matter of cleaning and sanitising one thing as opposed to trail jars, syringes etc.

hmm might try that although if it's down to 1.000 or below there isn't going to be much sticking up above the surface...

just checked on my amazon delivery, it's actually coming from Singapore.. that'll teach me doh

I use a longer 280mm hydrometer for FV's, its the colour markings on it which help make it easier to see.
