Eh Up,

I read that this yeast does not attenuate that well leaving beer a bit sweet....so I calculated to get a 4.5% abv I need to aim for 70% attenuation.

Thus I thought...OG 1047...FG about 1012 would be close to the mark....

Missed OG by a couple of points, ended up with 1050...no biggy as it might finish a bit higher at 1013-1014.. Checked the gravity this morning 1011 and still fermenting like a train...this is an abv of 5.3%!!! it looks like it will drop a few more points too..

The attenuation of this batch of yeast is over 80%. Just a one off you would think? No....Happened earlier with a pale ale, which I thought was a one off...Anybody else had this surprise?

The ABVs of Fullers' beers would suggest that it is not a particularly low attenuator. ESB (bottled version) has an ABV of 5.9% from an OG of 1060 (Brewing Network podcast) suggesting attenuation of 75ish.

There seems to be some uncertainty on whether the yeast in Fullers' BC beers is the primary strain. Did I read somewhere they have a separate casking strain for draught beers ?

I recently made 'Cumberland Strong' a higher alcohol version of Jennings Cumberland Ale with Bengal Lancer Yeast. It dropped from 1054 to 1012 giving an attenuation of 75-6 % and ABV of 5.4%...... just drinking a pint of it as I type!
I'm sure I've read that it is the primary strain in BL, I like it anyway...really rate this yeast.

It's belting as a yeast. whether its the primary strain or what, who cares.

It ferments like a wotsit, when its finished, shove it on chill for a bit and it drops out of suspension like a brick, welding itself to the bottom of the fermenter. It adds smooth malty tones to your brew, conditions up quickly but does tend to mask big hop flavours. I love this yeast, it matches my taste for beers as I really have gone off hop bombs.

Just looked mine up, and I was getting 75% using this yeast :thumb:

Agree - who cares if its primary strain or not, its a cracking yeast :thumb: Although I thought someone had contacted Fullers who had said it was the primary strain :wha:
