i am just at the clearing stage of a cc white zinfandel kit and it says to add potassium sorbate which I have done, it then says to add the chitosan, then the kieselsol..

trouble is either i have lost the chitosan or it never came iwth it and it is a generic set of instructions (which it is to some degree as it talks about oak chips if required etc.)

thoughts?

If you are in a rush and have a local home brew shop see what finings they sell, if you are not email the kit manufacturer and explain i did this with a WineBuddy kit and they sent me a free replacement the next day.

Wikos wine clear a quid, if you bulk age it in demi johns it will clear its self , they only provide clearing agents so you can drink it quick. Its far better to age it a few months.

my next door neighbor had the same issue with CC Pino Grigio, simply missing from the pack - the Wilko £1 sachets are chitosan mate, (well one of the two joined sachets is, its written on the back) - I gave him one to use.

I'm going mad.. I have the chitosan.. I dont have the kieselsol..

I do have some kwik clear...

do i use the chitosan then kwik clear? parts A and B?

No dont start mixing, just use the quick clear if your in a hurry to drink it.

now I remember.. I added potassium metabisulphite 4 days ago.. and the kieselsol..

DOH.

I think this stage (2nd helping of kieselsol) is maybe for reds that require more clearing.

sorry fellas.

actually, his was missing the 2nd dose, his kit said to add Kieselsol, which he did, then 24 hrs later, add chitosan. When he came to do the 2nd dose 24 hrs later, it was missing !!!

Wilko Pack A is Silica Sol
Wilko pack B is Chitosan. (which he used)..

Is yours deffo the other way round?>

Edit - as you've not added either yet, go with the suggestion, and don;t mix - just use kwik clear

As T says no need to mix it, email the kit manufacturer then you can use the kit finings if you make a juice wine or something.

stage 3 says if your kit contains 2 kiesol use 1 now and 1 in stage 4, mine only contained 1.

in stage 4 it says "if you kit contained 2 add it now" - just me being stupid.. only 1 kiesol required.

see instructions..

I didn't notice the start of clearing started under the degassing heading and the second part is under the clarification heading, i bet that has caught a few out.

These are typical Winebuddy instructions from my Sav Blanc kit review, easy to follow - http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=49224

Instructions.

1. Sterilise FV.

2.Pour in 5 litres of hot water maximum 53c.

3. Pour in 4Kg of sugar.

4. Pour in the contents of the concentrate bottle.

5. Top the FV up to 22.7 litres.

6. Pour in the contents of the Yeast/yeast nutrient pack and also the French Oak Chips pack.

7. Fit lid and airlock.

8. leave the FV in a warm room (20c - 25c) for 6 days (ignore the 6 day guesstimate it will take longer even in summer) then check the specific gravity using a hydrometer, if the gravity is less than .996 move to step number 9 (stabilising and clearing)

9] Pour the contents of the stabiliser pack into the wine and stir vigorously to degas.

10] Pour in pack D - F pack A & B To enhance the varietal of the wine.

11] Pour in pack E - finings 1 stir and leave for 1 hour.

12] After 1 hour pour in pack F finings 2 stir and wait 1 hour.

13] After 1 hour pour in pack G finings 3 cover and leave for 24 hours
