Windows 7 or 8?

I'd happily go back to the text menus we had before Windows arrived.
In fact I'd quite like to go back to NOS but I can't afford a CDC Cyber 175 and couldn't fit it in the house anyway. Ditto VM/CMS on an Amdahl 5890...

The Raspberry Pi we got for The Lad runs a version of Linux, I only ever knew a bit and that's rusty, but the next desktop I buy might well be running it.

I must be the only person who like windows 8 , however i went from vista to 8 so i don't know how good 7 was/is. I must admit i'm not too struck on the applications bit (mainly cuz you have to log in to a windows account , and there's 1 thing i don't like doing and that's what i'm told ) so i just use normal desk top .

I love Windows 8 on my HP touchsmart PC.

It's works fine and I've never had a single problem with it. Then again I just use it and don't spend hours p*****g about with the settings like some people do. ;-)

Fortunately I missed out on Vista, and went from XP to 7. As an operating system 7 did everything I wanted it to do, with ease. Perhaps if my laptop had a touch screen I may think differently about 8, but I don't, so for me it's ****. It was so much easier opening programs with 7 and the start button. Now I have to go back to the metro screen and scroll across hundreds of useless and unwanted apps before I get to the ones I want. I have no interest in ChaCha, Stumbleupon, X Box live or the numerous others that clutter the screen and no doubt my hard drive.

Most of the programs I use frequently are accessible through keyboard shortcuts, e.g. ctrl-alt-F for Firefox, ctrl-alt-W for Open Office (OOo) Write, ctrl-alt-x for OOo Calc, ctrl-alt-C for the calculator, ctrl-alt-G for Chrome, etc. It's so instinctive to me to use those shortcuts that I've even set up my parents' desktop and laptop with the same ones. The only programs I have to search for on the start menu are those I use very rarely.

Assuming Windows 8 allows that I'll probably be able to migrate across fairly easily. But if 8 doesn't allow it I'll ditch Windows in favour of Linux for any future machines.

When you buy your aging MiL a new box, it has to work just like the old one. If I'd known what 8 was like I'd have bought something else. Took me about 8 hours over several visits to get it to a point she understood it. It'd have been quicker, but 8 kept hiding the bits I wanted to use or expose
We never had this trouble with the ICL 1906 !

Fair point. I will concede that it's not terribly friendly when running it on older hardware or on new hardware with old software.

Have you thought of Linux ?

Not really no, would I be able to run all the same stuff I don now on it? (mainly adobe web stuff)

A lot of Adobe stuff is OK on Linux - what do you use?

You can (I think its now fair to say) always find a Linux app which will replace the Windoze equivalent and run faster and use less resource.
Unfortunately I don't think this is true. You can certainly find similar programs that will do similar things. But if you already have an investment in Windows software (in my case, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom) then there won't always be an exact match. I think this will probably apply more to "professional" software rather than everyday programs.
