hi all, just been and bought a cerveza kit from wilkos and was wondering wether to use normal sugar or will it turn out better if pimped up a bit ?

the kit says that adding 1kg of sugar should give abv of about 4% i plan on brewing it a bit short but wondered if i should replace some of the sugar with some light spraymalt that i have (500g)

should i do half n half, or all of the malt and say 650g sugar, or 250g of malt and make up the rest with sugar to 1kg

any advice or your own experience with tinkering would be welcome

cheers

Ian

I would probably go with 500g sugar and 500g spraymalt...Which is pretty much what Beer Kit Enhancer is (although the sugar is brewers sugar).

You could add 1kg of sugar and the spraymalt, but the resulting rise in alcohol might make it taste a bit thin and watery.

If it's similar to the Coopers variety then I would recommend 1kg of brewing sugar and 500g of light DME. That brewed to 23L should come out perfect.

Out of the can the product seems about 500g of DME short for 23L IMO. Adding that gives it the body that it should have, adding the full kg of sugar gives it a bit more oomph... like it should also have.

Every kit I do from now on is getting tweaked. Whether it's beer, cider or wine. They are all much better when brewed short or have the main ingredients increased.

Got a kilo of brewing sugar today so will use that with the dme And will brew to 23l and see how it goes

Thanks for the replies :-)

Hi guys... Very green newbie here... Ive just started of brewing and am on my first kit brewing wilkos forest fruit cider... which is going nicely... I plan to do the wilkos cerveza kit next and will be following advice I spot on tweaking the recipies but I am struggling with some of the lingo!! what do you mean by DME please.. Also what do you mean by brewing short?

Hi Dysonno and welcome to the forum

There's a "Glossary" button to the left of the forum banner which may help with some of the abbreviations we use.

DME is Dried Malt Extract, often referred to as Spraymalt. If you're using any of the one tin beer kits or those which are now being sold in strong foiled bags, and which require the addition of a bag of sugar, you can improve that kit and give your beer more body by substituting malt extract for some or all of that sugar. There are also "brew enhancers" which contain a mixture of DME and brewing sugar. You would normally use these products in ales, although there are light spraymalts which could be added to lagers.

Brewing short simply means using less water than the kit instructions tell you to, for example making up to 21 litres instead of 23. Obviously, you get slightly less beer but it will have a bit more body and a slightly higher alcohol content.
