Just taken a SG reading and it’s saying about 1.020. Does this seem odd? The kit instructions (which are generic across all of the artisan beer making kits) says it should be ending about 1.008?

It sounds like you have a classic stuck brew: brews ferment down to 1.020 then stop, rather than getting down to the usual 1.010 or lower.

Can be hard to pinpoint the cause but some reckon it's due to lack of yeast. Did you happen to notice how big the yeast packet that came with the kit was? Some kits provide a small 6g packet rather than the usual 11/12g packet needed for a 23L brew. Having said that, I've just had an AG stout stick at 1.020 with a full-size yeast packet.

Brilliant advice folks. Hadn’t heard of this but I think it recently happened to a Christmas beer I made!

I’ll have a think about my options!

Should be ok I would of thought. With the wilko kits I always use their separate package yeast I think it’s 12grams instead of 8.

My brother brewed this one and it's come out of conditioning now, it's a really nice stout, lots of caramel and roasted flavours, you can't really tell it's a kit. It's got a slight chocolate smell but no chocolate taste which is the only disappointment with the brew. Over all though it's a pretty good kit.
