i have just started a wilkinsons own beer kit. it was only £10. i havent seen them in there before so for that price its worth a go. they have lager, pilsner and i bought a newkie brown. they probably do a few others too. if anyone else has tried one let us know what its like. cheers...

The best advice with the cheap kit is Patience, & lots of it. If you can leave it for a month or two when it's finished, it will taste better :thumb:

being honest i think more and more people are homebrewing these days because of the price of beer in pubs. i paid £4.15 for a pint of localally brewed ale the other night...for an extra £6 i could have brewed 40 pints. the smoking ban hasn't helped but the government are killing the pub/brewing industry. where's all the people who don't smoke who were staying away from pubs because of the people who smoked in them?? they're staying away because of the beer prices. i don't smoke myself but they should have parts of a pub where you can smoke, with extractor fans and not being made to go outside in the snow for a fag...a pub is to socialise. its not very sociable when your mates and your wife are getting up for a fag every half hour and leaving you to watch there handbag...cut the tax on beer and have INDOOR smoking area's & watch the people come flooding in. :drink:

I have also seen these. Does anyone know who actually makes them for wilkos?

It's tempting for sure but 12 quid gets u a coopers kit so not sure it's worth it!?

Wilkos near me stocks Coopers kits as well and their only £13. Geordie kits are £11...

They did have an own-brand 2 can kit for £22 which I was tempted by though :)

Why pay £22 for a wilkos's home brand when for the same or maybe £1 more you can get a Woodfordes 2 can kit?

I know which i would buy and it's not the Wilko's one!

Is that all they are? I've seen them for like £30...

Apparently Wherry is down to £15 in Wilkinsons currently.
I'll be stocking up on that if I can find any.

I've just pressure barreled a wilko sweet newkie brown £10 I added 500g med DME and 650g dextrose and brewed to 20 litres. i must say i am most impressed judging by early tastes, its darker than proper Newcastle Brown, getting on for appearance of a mild but the taste is quite sweet and fullish bodied a bit raw yet but i have good feelings about it.
PS I have bought a wherry for £15, dont like commercial bitters ie john smiths but thought it must be worth a punt at that price

Muntons are like the wheatabix of beer lol cornflakes make their own like coppers but wheatabix make everything for every else

Just been checking out Wilkinsons Home Brew section on line, and they have a really good range of kits, ingredients and equipment.
I will be paying a visit this week to my local store (Wakefield) to see what stock they hold.

The Wilkinson kits are made by Muntons as are the Wherry and Geordie kits. They also make Woodforde's, Milestone, St Peters, Tom Caxton, EDME and probably others too. I definitely think it is worth trying the Wilkinson kits as they are made by a quality manufacturer and also they are British. I cannot see the point in importing malt from Australia when we have so much good home grown stuff.

I Have rently brewed the pilsner and cerveza.

Pilsner has been in the bottles now for approx 7 weeks, i used 1kg dextrose and 500g light spray malt. Even though i overprimed and ended up with a couple of bottle bombs this has calmed down (after re-capping twice to re-lieve a bit of pressure) and is a very nice light pilsner. I would definitely do this one again.

Cerveza has just been bottled at the weekend so i will report back in 4-5 weeks to see how this is getting on. If it turns out as good as the pilsner then they are a good buy at such a small price.

Add to this companies like enterprise and pubmaster screwing landlords by tying them into expensive contracts, charging double the going rate for their beer, how can a leased pub tied into an expensive contract compete with free houses like wetherspoons who pay half as much for their beer from the brewery

This^^^^^^
I've got three mates who have all taken on enterprise inns pubs and all have been priced out, largely due to them making a success of the pubs. It's criminal!!
