Popped in yesterday to get some supplies. Among various other things, I got some of the brewing sugar and one of their £10 Pilsner kits... be interesting to see what it turns out like.

I did notice that they're only 1.5kg, but for £10... gotta be worth a punt innit. Could be a nice session drink if it turns out alright :)

Shoot me down if you want - but why would you pay over the odds for 'brewing sugar' :wha:

Do yaselves a favour and gan to Aldi or Lidl and buy their sugar, your yeast will convert the same stuff into alcohol....

.....only it'll cost you less ;)

It was birthday money from last week, so I wasn't too fussed.

Fwiw, I used Aldi sugar in the wow :)

Aldi sugar isn't brewing sugar though, is it? :wha:

I think that's the point though, as I read it ouldstout isn't of the opinion that there is an advantage from dextrose rather than table sugar, I don't have the experience to judge but the truth is that both will produce alcohol.

What is the brewing sugar?? Is that the same as the "beer kit enhancer" they sell? cos thats a mixture of maltose, dextrose and glusose...

I haven't done the actual brewing experiments but:

The alcohol in beer from malt is produced mostly from Maltose, a disaccharide comprising two glucose molecules.
Brewing Sugar is Dextrose, a monosaccharide comprising a single inverted or "mirror-image" glucose molecule.
Granulated sugar is sucrose, a disaccharide comprising one glucose and one fructose molecule.

Brewing sugar gives you the same first stage breakdown product as you get in mashed wort - glucose. Granulated sugar is going to give you something more akin to the sugars from fruit. Any by-products from fermentation are, one could surmise, likely to be more "winey" or "cidery" than perhaps you might want in a beer (probably quite good for a Belgian style though...).

TBH, I only ever use it for bottling now - all beers now get done with DME at least and more often than not LME. The difference in quality over any sugar easily justifies the cost.

Brewing sugar = pure dextrose
BKE = mix of DME and dextrose (AFAIK)

With regards to the fermentable sugars I've found dextrose to be the quickest to start fermenting and ferments out fully leving no residual taste as the yeast doesnt have to go to work first smashing the granulated sugar apart. If im stuck for dextrose, tate and lyle will do as its made from suger cane. But not silver spoon as thats made from sugar beets and more than likely leave a cidery taste.
Also I prime with disolved dextrose to make make my lager or beer as lively as I would like.

I'm not sure there would be a hell of a difference TBH. They are refined pretty much to the point of purity so all you get is sucrose.

Yup! And that's the beauty of beer!

Exactly what it all boils down to - learn the stuff, brew the beer then keep brewing in the way that makes the beers you love.

While you're here...

...just sampled the BB Export Lager that I did with extra light DME... That is one tasty, refreshing pint! You where right all along... :thumb:

Update on the Wilko Pilsner:

The Krausen collar came off the FV tonight, so I thought I'd run off a quick sample to see how things are coming along. After 3 days, SG is down to 1010 from a OG of 1035, so that bit seems to be working at least lol. Looks like it's going to be a very pale lager as you'd expect of a Pilsner, and it smells very... sweet for want of a better word.

Wife sipped the sample again... she approves and reckons she's drink it now if it was finished!

All looking good so far.
