I've never gotten this.. When I lived at home with my Parents, I got myself a couple and my Mum always muttered about them being "common".. One 'mysteriously' broke and the other got "given to the jumble sale"..

Also, when I've been out with the Wife in the past I've asked for a pint in a mug and she's been all "oh.. What did you get one of THOSE glasses for?"

I've always liked them personally, but I'm always afraid to ask for one with birds about because they look down their nose at it.

I just bought myself one today (it was only $2, so I might buy a few more!) and NOTHING BETTER HAPPEN TO IT!! :nono:

Edit: This sort, to clear up any confusion..

My missis would batter me if I got her two halves instead of a pint.
Or are you talking about the dimpled ones with handles? They were the commonest type where I grew up and I'd much prefer a straight (or gently curved) glass that doesn't look like it's just waiting to be turned into a leaded stained glass window

Yeah, those are the ones I mean.. The women don't give a **** about straight pint glasses, but they always get upset about these...

I like the mug/pot types though, especially for bitter.

I have a few of those too - love 'em too, wifey drinks from them too sometimes. I heard they are now a health and safety risk in uk and are banned from pubs!!

I much prefer those glasses with the handles on compared to the straight glasses found in pubs nowadays, i do have a good few at home too, and these babies will soon find a new home in the shed!!!

My wife will drink out of both half pint and pint tall glasses, depends where we are, but i generally get her a half pint when we go out, i just prefer her to have a half pint glass, more lady like!!

A pint pot like that is lost in the hands of some o the " ladies " in my little town......

Big Mary is a laugh......

The pub I used to work in kept the pots for holding cutlery, after they were told to keep them out of circulation. I kept half a dozen hidden behind the bottles of Diamond White for personal use in my off hours. They're much nicer to drink from than the normal pint glasses, I found the beer didn't get warmed up as fast from drinking with a handle.

nope, theyre just very expensive compared to straight side glasses, you can still get kite marked dimpled mugs. this health and safety fib has been bandied around for years, dosent make it any more true though. some pub cos insisted that they were withdrawn and a few councils asked for em not to be used, but legally you can still use em(if they have volume marks and are made of the correct glass) and theyre now seeing a resurgance in the trendy beerati craft ale boozers

They're easier to hold if you've arthiritic hands .
One of my locals , the Three Kings at Hanley Castle only uses them . The pub's been run by the same family for over 100 years and has had over 1000 different ales through the pumps.

You could always take your own glasses.
I recall a pub in Salford where one chap had his own kept behind the bar - they knew which was his, it was the only cow's horn in the place

I hate those pint pots and always ask for a straight glass if I know a pub uses them. My hands are too big for the handles and they're too heavy. Although they are preferable to those girly Stella glasses.

I absolutely loath straight glasses, horrible cheapy tacky modern things, bin em. Bring back proper glasses.

Handled pint pots are the way forward, iconic in british pubs, nice heavy glass for drinking ale from, they look good too - I remember my grandad taking me down the club and drinking from them, and my dad on the rare occasion we were out at the pub.
No one bloody makes them any more though, the last factory shut down I read somewhere.
If I remember correctly the dimples were put in to save glass.

For me it's like a choice between hand carved mahogany or ikea furniture, really there is no contest.

Every time someone says "oh thats common" I think to myself "Who are you, lord snot from the tugacock manor?" common, load of nonsense. I'd rather be common than a ******.

Traditional tankards definitely still available - for example from here. Probably not so widely used now as they are more expensive. I've never thought of them as common, just uncomfortable. In fact, the nearest pub near work uses them for ale and it's a hideously overpriced place.

I do prefer a handled glass but find there's something cheap and tacky about the old fashioned dimpled pint pot.

I much prefer the smooth-sided tankard as the previous forum glass:

.... and I really like the look of the Ikon tankard as we've been ordering for a Spring Thing commemorative.

Mrs. Mole will use a smooth tankard or a straight pint glass but would never request a dimpled pot, and certainly never a half pint.

I don't often use my quart tankard though:

Perhaps because they didn't acquire them?

When I worked in a pub in the 80's we never like them either, tbh. They were awkward to get into the washer and took an age to chill. And that's no good on a Friday night when punters are 4 deep at the bar baying for beer!

I love those glasses :) Mostly because they're harder to break than the tall plain ones. The dishwasher broke the last one a few weeks ago, and they're not so cheap to replace. I bought two of those in half-pint sizes from a charity shop, and drink from them all the time (juice and stuff, I don't drink cider all day!)

Moley, those straight sided handled glasses are great, we had a set once and they were my favourite glasses of all time and I was quite sad each time we lost/broke one!
