They were a nightmare for indoor use as they produced about 8 pints of moisture from an average-sized gas bottle.

I never had Betamax and until today didn't know it had superior picture quality over the JVC recorder but the weight and one hour tapes killed it.

Yep better recordings, but also more expensive.
I believe the technology behind Betamax didn't disappear and reappeared miniaturised in all their hand-held videocameras the Video 8 Handycams - analogue and subsequent digital versions using much smaller tapes too.
Also Professional and broadcast quality ones were really neat packages.
Shows how good it truly was,
the VHS camcorders meanwhile were massive unwieldy behemoths!
