Hi,

Im new to using fruit juices for making wine as ive normally used the kits.

Here is the white wine i am currently brewing:

2l White Grape Juice Pure Pressed from Tesco
1l Sun Grown Pure Apple Juice from concentrate
577g Household sugar
1 tsp Pectic Enzyme
Yeast and Nutrient

Disolved Sugar with 0.5l of water and allow to cool.
Added syrup and juice to bucket, and added pectic enzyme, yeast and nutrient.

Made it up to 4 litres

O.G 1090 on the 27/12/2010

Ive checked it again today and the gravity was 1035, ive topped it up to 1 gallon

I would have thought that the gravity would have been lower so im hoping it hasnt stopped fermenting.

Has anyone done these wines and knows how long it should take?

When/If this turns out ok, I was thinking about doing a few more batches but with small added ingredient such as raisins, strawberries etc.

Any criticism is very welcome.

thanks
Paul

I dont think thats too bad paul, its probably just slowed down, check it again in another few days, shud be fine mate

cool thats good then.

I did have a heater inside the fermentation container but have taken it out as i thought that might have been the problem. Perhaps I should put it back in????

ive got some ribena wine on the go but thats just sat in the kitchen with no direct heat on it, going along nicely. When i used to do wine from kits i used to to use a brew belt

Yeah ive got some ribena wine that is bubbling along nicely, dont suppose you have tried yours yet? Any good?

Sounds fine to me as it hasn't been going for a week yet and temperature is likely to be a bit on the cool side.

I usually expect juice wines to ferment out in 2-4 weeks, then allow another couple of weeks for clearing.

cheers thats made me feel better moley.

has anyone tried fruit juice wine but only using 2l of fruit juice? is it just really watery? was thinkin it would make a 5 gallon brew cheaper and if someone has done it before it would save me some time and money.

Is there any guidelines for how much juice? and would the save go if i got a juicer and blended enough grapes apples etc to make 2 or 3 litres?? sorry for the million question.

mln810 - let me know what its like.

Check out the various Wurzel's threads and my guide, as long as one of them is grape juice, 2l of fruit juice is fine.

Juicing your own fruit isn't going to be cost-effective, and you're heading into the realms of proper country winemaking so the timescale goes up considerably.

Carton juices come in two main categories, ‘pure pressed’ and ‘from concentrate’.
‘Juice Drinks’ don't really count as they are mostly water.

Pure Pressed will contain more of the original fruit goodness, has probably been pasteurised but has been packed at source or shipped in bulk as it was extracted.

From Concentrate has been boiled down or otherwise condensed, shipped in tankers and watered down again prior to packing.

Fresh squeezed will give you all of the goodness and maximum flavour, at a price.

Hi

Why must one be grape juice Moley? I only ask as I have a wurzel clearing which has no grape juice in :?

Cheers

Well it ain't a bloody Wurzel then, is it?

Basic White No.1 is white grape juice + apple juice.
Wurzel's Orange is white grape juice + orange juice, with a few modifications.
Other juices can be used along the same theme but one should always be grape juice.

Grape juice gives it the vinosity, the body, the ‘wine’ quality.

Sorry about that, I was being hassled to go out and provide a free taxi service for darling daughter, so in my haste I typed the first thing that came to mind without filtering for tact or diplomacy.

Stick with it, I'm sure you'll get something alcoholic and drinkable, but maybe a bit thin.

Well all Im going to say Moley is, your Wurzel guide didn't make it clear that grape juice is required to make it a wine! :nono: That's all Im going to say on the matter
