Which movie(s) have you watched recently?

In The Loop was a fantastic political comedy. Written by Armando Iannucci and starring Peter Capaldi, what's not to like? Clever and funny, even for someone like myself who has no knowledge of or interest in politics.

Cheers, I've always liked Armando Iannucci's stuff. Loved watching 'the day today' with Steve Coogan in my youth. I'll definitely look this up.

I thought I'd resurrect this old thread and update it. I've watched a few older classics recently, movies I should have seen long ago to be honest. Citizen Kane an obvious classic, Fellini's 8 1/2 which to be honest didn't really do it for me, Tarkovsy's Stalker which was beautiful, confusing and interesting, Three Colours: Red, a bit arty but well worth a watch (actually the whole Three Colours trilogy is great).

Also watched recently, a movie which probably won't become a classic, The Last Jedi which was fine I suppose. There were some great moments in it (the throne room fight, all the Luke scenes) and some s***e moments (the horse things through the casino, pretty much every scene with Rose). I appreciate the director trying to do something a bit different with a star wars movie and it was fine. I know there are a lot of haters but honestly, it's star wars, it's not supposed to be art. Which isn't to say a big budget sci-fi movie can't be art.

Which brings me to Blade Runner 2029 which is without a doubt my favourite movie of the last couple of years. Every aspect of it just comes together perfectly, the story is interesting and intriguing, the visuals are spectacular, the soundtrack is incredible, the special effects are brilliant, the world-building is rich, varied and complex, building beautifully on the original. Yes it's long and the pacing is slow, but the long run time is well earned in my opinion, there's no filler. Villeneuve and Deakins make an amazing team and I hope they work together a lot more in the future.

Well It wasn't too bad at all, infinitely better than the 1990 version for sure. Some creative and creepy imagery, a very good score and a decent adaption of the source material. In general child actors are terrible, so how they managed to find 7+ really great child actors is a miracle in itself.

Watched Baby Driver the other night. Really enjoyed it, had a bit of a Tarantino feel to it, plenty of action but a good story line too.

Shame that Kevin Spacey (who was in this film) has a thing for young boys as I do like his acting but I doubt we'll be seeing much of him in the movies ever again.

Great movie, I love Edgar Wright and I know what you mean, there's definitely a Tarantino coolness to it.

Not seen it yet but enjoyed the first one. I understand what you're saying, I'm suffering a bit of superhero fatigue myself but I was actually pleasantly surprised by Thor Ragnarok though, I thought it was really good.

And (going back a few years), Apocalypto.

Must also mention Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder. Such a clever film.

We went to watch Venom yesterday. The start of the film is literally terrible, we came close on walking out. Luckily Venom itself saved the film, which is probably not the best recommendation I know, but yeah was good once that all got started.... Assuming you're not hugely into canon that is.... Tom Hardy though was a HUGE casting mistake, his acting belongs in something like a bad (is there any other kind?) soap, not on the cinema screen... It was a phoned in performance, only he was physically present for it.

I watched the Last Jedi recently, I thought it was garbage. It's quite dull and there are many problems the creators have not thought about. They live in a time where they battle in space with space ships and laser guns, but they seem to use single glazed windows on the space ships as they shatter at a drop of a hat. The tie fighters seem to be coated in petrol or something as they violently explode after one hit. And the Rebel Alliance seem to have the military strategy and tactics as a 13 year old getting bored on Red Alert 2. I saw Solo recently too, it's better - it can at least get away with being a generic action film - but towards the end they try and crowbar in loads of twists which I think kind of ruin it.

Just a quick update on some of the movies I've watched recently:

Her by Spike Jones was a wonderful film which handled a potentially ludicrous plot intelligently and beautifully and has some really moving scenes. Joaquin Pheonix is brilliant as ever, well worth a watch.

I also recently saw another Spike Jones movie called Hunger which is about Bobby Sands and the hunger strikes. Being from NI I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this movie but I have to say it was incredibly well balanced and showed the humanity and weaknesses on both sides. Another brilliantly made movie, but not an easy watch by any means.

A rather more obscure one was The Passion Of Joan Of Arc, a silent movie from 1928. What a movie, this should be on any film lover's watch list. The lead actress's incredible performance and the use of close ups make this a seriously powerful movie. My only criticism would be the music on the version I watched which was very repetitive, a little distracting, and honestly didn't fit the tone of the movie. Otherwise this was a brilliant watch.

My son (14) talked us into watching a marvel film every sat night, reluctantly watched 4 up to now and quite enjoying them tbh.

On the cards for next sat is avengers, I don't know what I expected from these films but they are quite different and entertaining.

Bit of a haze...I watched something about a load of vampire type things and some chap trying to round them up and kill them....
