Just received my first two discs from cinema paradiso, The Third Man (one of those classics that I've never seen) and Three Colours: Blue, the first part of Kieslowski's Three Colours trilogy, thanks again Foxbat for the recommendation.

Looks like I'll be signing up to Cinema Paradiso in the new year when my backlog of stuff to watch runs out. I do need to explore the back catalog some more, so many classics I haven't seen. By the way, if you haven't seen the original 'Heat' by Michael Mann then you really should add it to your list. It's a modern masterpiece.

Really enjoyed the De Nero/ Pacino version.

I have seen it and loved it, though it's been a while so a re-watch is in order soon.

Is that the 1995 film Heat? It is a classic, but it was itself a remake of Micheal Mann's earlier film LA Takedown... if you liked Heat, try this too to illustrate teh difference that budget and big stars can make.!

Yes it's the 1995 film. I've seen both, but in the wrong order, that is I saw the later one first. The first was good but the remake was just amazing.

recently watched Jungle with Daniel Radcliffe in, really enjoyed it, also the fact it was based on true encounters makes it more worht a watch

Speaking of low budget movies, I watched a sci fi movie a few nights ago called Primer which was made with a budget of $7000! Even a budget of 7 million would be considered low so it's amazing they could put together a movie for so little. And of course it's a little rough around the edges, but it's so cleverly written that you quickly forget about the unpolished production.

The guy who wrote and directed it also stars in it along with a few of his mates, which obviously kept costs down, but the amazing thing is it's shooting ratio, that is the amount of raw footage shot compared to the amount used in the final cut of the movie. This had a shooting ratio of 1.04:1 meaning that there was only about a minute of unused footage.

With 35mm film costing around $70 per minute you can see that's a huge money saver. Compare that to the new Mad Max movie which had a shooting ratio of 280:1 with almost 500 hours of footage shot!

But nevermind the technicalities of production, it's a time travel movie and because the writer is actually a scientist irl (a mathematician I think) it is one of the most realistic, or at least most plausible, depictions of time travel in a movie.

The acting is mostly decent enough and the dialogue is pretty natural for the most part, but the plot is very clever. Actually it's almost a little too clever for its own good, without giving anything away, this really needs a couple of watches to really appreciate the complexity. But if you're a fan of smart sci fi then this one is really worth a watch or two.

We have watched in the last 2 days the bourne identity and bourne supremacy, we have the rest to watch, as bought the box set.

Primer is a brilliant film. Have it saved on my Tivo box for a rewatch sometime.

My recommend, is The Shining. Yeah, we've all seen it, but watch it again and then watch the documentary Room 237 afterwards. Mindblowing, a) the detail in the genius of Kubrick b) the depths of the analysis, theory and conspiracy. Steven Kings story isn't what the film is about.

Have you seen the "Primer" guy's other movie called "Upstream Color"? I haven't seen it yet, but apparently it's just as good and equally mind-bending, and with a massive $50,000 budget the production is much better.

Good call on The Shining, I'm not much of a horror fan but it is a masterpiece and Kubrick really was a genius, I've loved every one of his films that I've seen.

Resident Evil 8 (not in the cinema, I erm found it somewhere). Don't ask. Actors probably are happy it's over too

 I don't even know if you're joking, are there actually 8 movies in that franchise??

Totally true. Two of them are anime (not even too bad actually, closer to the games than the reallife versions) and number 8 is The Final Chapter. They even changed the origin story in the last one, as if they never watched parts 1 and 2 themselves :-(

Im watching all the old "magic Roundabout" films. nice and short and really good for a chuckle

No I haven't. Will definitely look out for it.

Watched Rush last Saturday and thought it was an excellent piece of film-making. It told the story of the rivalry between James Hunt and Nikki Lauda brilliantly; so much so that the actual racing almost takes a back seat.

Wow that's quite amazing. I suppose if it makes money they'll keep making it, just look at that steaming pile of Transformers movies

Embarrassing confession though, I actually quite liked the first Resident Evil movie. Don't get me wrong, it's not a good film on any level, but I found it pretty entertaining when it came out. Maybe it was the metal soundtrack, the hot female lead or the fact that I was 18 at the time

True, the first two are not too bad. Well managed, good stunts, Marilyn Manson took care of the soundtrack. Then it became more and more ridiculous: leather suits, bizarre physics, lazy CGI, lazy story twists like "we're all clones down here".
