Have you tried adding washing up liquid? If you added enough that might give a nice foamy head which lasts all they way to the bottom of the glass!

Seriously there is a big difference in the way the beer appears in the two washed glasses. Neither are very good. They are forming bubbles on the sides of the glass. I some times get that happen. Were the two washed glasses bone dry? I will try a test tomorrow as well.

iv got a magic cloth thats meant for cleaning windows and mirrors . its detergent free and leaves my glasses soap, smear free. cost me a quid

As others have said the glass being bone dry is also important - water has the same "smoothing" effect on those imperfections. That's why when you pour a coke first time it'll fizz right up, but when you top it up it doesn't so much.

Funny really, as time goes on glasses get scratched/worn/pitted etc., you'd think a well-used glass would produce more head. Hey ho.

Detergent is notorious for destroying head on beer. Way back, in my first bar job, we had terrible problems with head retention with our lager (it was Harp, that's how long ago it was). Both the glasses and the glasswasher were only two months old, but the pints looked like cider after 20 seconds. Anyway, when we called in the rep, he told us to cut right back on the detergent, only using it once a week. He said that it builds up on the glasses and in the glasswasher, and causes awful problems. So we washed all our glasses in very hot water, allowed them to dry naturally, and never had another problem. And this was years before nucleated glasses.

All seems a bit OCD to me...... ;)

Just thought I'd update you with how I'm doing...

Think I've cracked it!

I made a thick baking powder solution and soaked a couple of glasses in it overnight..

Ever since, I've made sure I only washed those glasses with hot water and let drip dry... happy days :)
