I'm not a big fan of white wine (prefer tacky rosé's and good reds) but have been getting more and more interested lately. The wines I've liked the most I've just asked for a fruity medium white, I'd love to try some stuff that's really punchy on the apple/pear/tropical fruit but refreshing. I've had a bottle of yellow tail pinot grigio this week, and have a bottle of chardonnay of the same brand to try.

please speak to me like I'm stupid, because I know nothing about white wine, and could really use a primer

I you want tropical fruit type flavours go for a new zealand sauvignon blanc. Will be full of rich zesty citrus, gooseberry type flavours.

Pinot Grigio tends to be a fairly neutral wine, quite delicate and not so in your face

some of the dry reislings, especially aussie/nz, have some lovely fruity flavours, particular hints of apple

My favourite white wine of all time is made from the "VIOGNIER" grape but only from France or California. Chile and Australia just dont seem able get the richness of the grape. You could compare it with a Gewurztraminer for luciousness. The Californian "Boulders" make is especially good. It used to be common at the CO-Op but I havent seen it for a while. Its About £5.99. The French one are normally "La Jamelles" Viv de Pays D'Oc. and are good. If you want to treat yourself get a "CONDRIEU" viognier from the Rhone Valley. At about £30 its a bit dear but worth it to taste one from the home of the Viognier grape.
DONT get one more than 2 years old as it goes flabby in bottle very quickly.
A red variety I like is the Italian "PRIMITIVO" (called the "ZINFANDEL" in America.
