You are indeed correct! Mine also have TOP written on the bottom ooops! Would this cause them to be inefficient? Hopefully so then I can reduce my boil off rate!

possibly. I would imagine they are designed to work better the right way up:P

You should turn them the other way up and try a test boil
 
I will. Thanks :) I need to do some proper markings so will make use of the water a little!

You're talking about DMS which can add a cooked vegetable flavour to your beer. However, I am lead to believe [by Aleman] that highly modified British malts have little in the way of the precursor that forms DMS so boiling with the lid mostly on is not actually a problem.
