What size hole is required for a 40mm qmax bolt to go through? I only have an 11mm drill bit so am hoping this is enough! Cheers

40mm Q-Max is a 12mm bolt, if you only have an 11 then i would just give it a wiggle.

Sorry mines 38mm so must have a different bolt size.

Yeh I've only got an 11. Hopefully it will screw in through the skin of the stock pot!

Would it work if I used my 21mm qmax cutter to cut a 21mm hole. Then use the 40mm qmax cutter to cut the larger hole around it? Or would it just slip as I tried to tighten the bolt?

It would work as long as you position the cutter precisely on your hole position. The middle doesn't matter with a qmax. The pressure is all on the outer portion.

Think I understand you. So as long as I line up the cutting side where I want it to punch through before I tighten it shouldn't move once I start to screw in the Allen key?

5 hours later....

Are they backer elements?
they are from the sponsor homebrew company.com.

Not sure if they are backer ones or not. How can I tell? They say 2400 2000w on them...

The backer ones are 2750 watt. Still need a 40mm hole though. Looking good. How long does it take to reach boil?

I only half filled last night for a test boil. So about 25 litres full and took about 30 mins with both elements to reach a boil.

I turned 1 off at the boil the boil reduces to a slight simmer. So looks like I'll need to be running both elements for the full 90 minute boil

This is the same for me (same boiler and elements) I need to run both for the whole boil but I find that 1 is not enough of a boil but 2 is too much! So you will probably find you lose a lot more to boil that expected. Something to bear in mind for calculating your efficiencies. (My boil off rate is about 7.5-8 l/hr)

That's interesting. And a lot of boil off! Do you do 23 litre batches I'm yours?

Any pics?

I have the same elements in my 50L boiler but only need one to keep a good rolling boil with the lid mostly on.

I was always under the impression that keeping the lid on was really bad due to the moisture falling back into the wort. I'm assuming this is not the case then? Your boil off rate must be really low?

I could be wrong but have you got those elements upside down? Mine had "top" written on the outside bit where the plug goes in. So the curved base of the element sits facing down.

oh I have no idea lol. Will check that out. wasn't aware it made a difference
