What makes a porter?

I`ve been looking at brewing a porter - have seen a few on the forum and wandered what makes a porter a porter? Plus i`ve got a kg of brown malt that looks like its not gonna get used :lol:

So really any help with grain bill and hops would be great :thumb:

Not quite . . . A Stout is merely a strong Porter . . . Or should be . . . Of course when these things were first being brewed the 'weak' Porter would have been about 1.060 minimum.
