When I was at school back in the mid 80's we had a Glaswegian lad join are class, anyway we went out to the shops one lunch time and he went to Burtons to buy a new pair of trousers as we were going on the pull at the weekend.

The shop assistant got a bit of o shock when he was asked for

' a perr of trews wae turnips'

Well he translated that as a pair of trousers with turnips of course he ment a pair of trousers with turnups, for those of you not old enough to remember trousers with turnups were a big thing back in 1986

an old farmer I knew got so annoyed with his local library that he went and dropped a trailer ful of swedes and rutabagas on their front door step - at the time I thought "that's a turnip for the books".

 I'll get my coat.
