I know you have already bought a car, but I thought I would put my 2 penneth in...

A Landrover 110 everyday of the week
The word is pennorth, a contraction of pennyworth ;)

I really like the 110, but do they class as cars or commercials, what are the road tax brackets and isn't the fuel consumption rubbish?

Switching insurance between cars and commercials can be a pain.

As I said above, I like a high driving position. That probably comes from owning a Hi-Lux, a Hi-Ace and a Transit, which got stolen and written off. I heard it start up, looked out the window and saw it drive off, chased it in the wife's car (barefoot and in a bath robe) and gave the police a running commentary until they joined and took over the pursuit. The b4$tard carried on driving it on 3 wheels after they used a stinger and completely trashed it. Got a slap on the wrists and 100 hrs community service.

It would depend on its previous use, if it was a commercial vehicle then that's what you'd be buying, it was a private car etc.

Fuel comsumption on a 110 TD5 isn't too terrible, for what you get, tow car, pick up, ability to climb any mountain ;)

I love them but wouldn't buy one as I live in a city and only need very occasional 4x4 capability :)

I haven't read all the replies, sorry, but I'd suggest buying a brand new car - if you can. I got mine for £6.5k.

I made the leap from paying through the nose for other people's second-hand cars and having the 'pleasure' of discovering why they got rid of them in the first place. Not Nice - and only once did I find a true gem in over 25 years of driving.

A new car gives you everything that works - and a motor you know what has happened to it.

As far as moving stuff goes; get a tow bar and trailer. That way you get fuel economy, an interior that hopefully stays nice and a workhorse add-on.

Either way, good luck.

Best estate car I ever had was an Audi 80 1.9TDi Avant. Went like a rocket, massive boot, easy to maintain and repair 55MPG, ran on cooking oil, pulled trailers, boats and low loaders with ease and even pulled several tree stumps out... :)

Land Rover 110 also a winner. Loads of room, easy to fettle and they'll get you anywhere. The 300TDi is easier to maintain and gives you about 23 MPG (snd that wasvwith me driving it like it was stolen and with a full legth roof rack on). The TD5 gives nearer 30 MPG and is perkier than the TDi but both are good. We have three at work which get very much abused driving between three farms and being used as work horses, one of which has over 200 000 miles on it and still starts on the first turn.
