Moving up through the gears

Tonight I'm having the 3rd of my Beer52 selection, a Mikkeller IPA with black pepper. This is really rather good, at 5.8% there's a bit more depth of flavour and the spicing is about perfect, adding a little background complexity without being too obvious.

Hazy beer so 'rolled it' before pouring - a little lively:laugh8: Great flavour with spicy hot finish.
Helping me get through Flatley's Celtic Tiger...o_O

I think that was my favourite from the last Beer52 case, and totally agree, the spicing was spot on.
Tonight, I'm have the first of the Totally Tropical from James Mortons book, brewed 6 weeks ago. It's very good, and does taste a bit like Lilt. To be honest, I think I preferred his Undead Pale Ale by a smidgeon, but both are excellent.

First up in my selection of Firehouse Brewery ales is Mainwaring's Mild which they say is based in a wartime recipe. It's quite fruity, I don't know what yeast they use. Slightly chocolate malt taste I think. Not bad. Low carbonation level, which I prefer in a mild.

Next up Endeavour Gold. Nice level of bittering, and I can taste the blackcurrant notes (Bramling X?) but it doesn't quite work for me. Low carbonation level again. Must be their style. It does make it very cask like.

I’d guess from the name that it’s endeavour hops they use, these also add dark berries, blackberry, and spice notes.

Oh yea. DOH! I even read that earlier on their website. :laugh8: :laugh8: I must be losing my marbles.

Next up is Endurance. Nice low carb level again. Much more my kind of thing this is. Best of the bunch so far.

First taste of my Munich malt IPA after only 2 days in the bottle (it's actually nicely carbed already). I know it looks oxidised, it's really not, the colour is from the dark Munich I used. I think the yeast I used (WHC Brexit) suppresses malt flavour, this is my 2nd time using it with Munich based beers and both of them have been slightly lacking maltiness. However I'm really happy with the hop flavour and aroma, dank and fruity marmalade, reminding me somewhat of Stone IPA. The bitterness is a tad high for my taste and there's a touch of hop burn that should age out but otherwise pretty good. I'm happy that I can't taste anything off from the Campden tablet and the fact that it has carbed so quickly suggests that it hasn't hurt the yeast too much either. Time will tell if it helps reduce oxidation.
