I was in morrisons and spotted some westons scrumpy cloudy cider in a half demijohn like bottle

It was £4 for 2 litres so I thought I'd give it a go

Wish I hadn't bothered!
Now I'm no cider expert and all that, BUT! If I could catch a rat and drink of its amber nectar, then I'm guessing it probably would taste better than this!

Is it just me or is this stuff fermented rats pee?

Oh well, at least I have a good half DJ bottle... If only I could find a bung to fit the bloody thing!

Sorry to hear about your experience, I haven't tried the 1/2 DJ of Westons but I liked the bottled Westons Old Rosie. I was also able to culture the yeast from it for use with a John Bull's Cider kit which was successful, I'm drinking and enjoying it now.

As far as bungs are concerned here is an ebay link for a large selection of bungs:

Cool! Thanks LeithR  :thumb:

Just looked around and can't seem to find any bungs small enough for the top of this bottle with a bore for an airlock

By the second glass it wasn't as bad as I thought, but it's not one I would call smooth, very "white lightening" harsh type cider.

I'll have to get my hands on an old Rosie  give that a try.

Do you think it's possible to cultivate from this westons scrumpy too?

I like the thought that I can get tiny DJs for £4 :thumb:

Just checked my receipt and morrisons price for the scrumpy is £4.55

I also got two 5 litre waters at 2 for £1.80 so did quite well at morrisons today, I've sweetened the scrumpy and added some blueberry so it's not too bad now, it's probably good and I'm probably an un cider cultured moron  it's just not quite my taste :nah:

I take it all back

After sweetening to my taste I've got quite a taste for this stuff!
Stronger and harsher than others but defo acquiring the taste fot it

Swear I even got a hiss from the bottle after sweetening  so I wonder if the yeast might be viable?

Here you go - try here for cork bungs any size = http://stores.ebay.co.uk/THE-HARDWARE-E ... c=1&_sop=1
Ps i am trying at the mo to get some 'yeast' going from one of those bottles as someone brough some over for me but - nothing yet at all. But the back up plan is - someone else has brought me four bottles of westons over too so maybe i'll have to wait until i get those.

No the scrumpy is sold as a cloudy still cider the only way you can guarantee that it is still with the yeast in is to kill the yeast.

Only the Old Rosie is viable. :thumb: :thumb:

I quite like the still scrumpy, always found the Old Rosie in bottles a bit fizzy, from the tap though its another story. Making mulled cider from the still scrumpy was a bonfire night / new year thing. Add honey, cinnamon, cloves to taste, cover and put on the lowest heat so as it doesn't boil but just warms nicely and let it mull for an hour or so. Lovely...

@screamlead sounds like you found the way the real somerset locals drink some dry & particularly tart ciders, a dash of orange to take the acidity down.
