Ok in terms of the amber malt extract, not sure what the equivalent would be. I presume you are copying an American extract recipe, the easiest way to convert this would be to use brewing software and try to recreate the values of this recipe except as an all-grain. Most of the software do free trials so you should try this.

Put some water in the mash tun to heat it up, dump this water then fill with your mash water and add the grain to this, make sure to mix well.

There is a fairly well known number for conversion but I can't find it and left my books elsewhere. IIRC it's the same as mashing 1.2 times the weight of grain, but don't quote me on that - this is more of a bump to try and generate some response from someone who does know.

Also rather than dumping the water you've just used to preheat the tun you could heat that water up a bit more than you need before adding it, then just let it come down to strike temperature before adding your mash bag. I'm guessing in the bag is crystal and chocolate or something? No pale malt as that's where the extract comes in? If so you may need some more extract for a 23l brewlength.

The extract can be added to the kettle.

IIRC the formula is 1kg grain = 0.75kg LME = 0.6kg DME, so your 1.5kg of Liquid Malt Extract is the equivalent of 2kg of grain (or 1.2kg of dry malt extract) :thumb:

yet again many thanks guys !!!!
shame that you cant share a pint on the net ( 0.5 of a litre in my case )...... CYBER DRINKING does that exist and if it did i'm sure the wife would complain ect ect....
