Sounds a silly question but when mesuaring water temperaturs in the HLT should the water be mixed first so there are no hot spots?

The water moves around pretty well as it heats, but I always give mine a (very) gentle stir with the thermometer as I take the temp.
:D

That’s what I was thinking. Was just looking at pids and temp controllers and was wondering how people over came it. anyone thought of adding a motorized stirrer to their HLT. Although I think that would be overkill.

I just recirculate the liquor before I mash in. I've considered a motor though, then realised that I'm not quite that lazy.

I thought about a 12 motor and a paddle . . . have even got a spare 12 output on my temp controller box to do just that . . . . having seen the 12V pumps at Solar project though I think that might be a better way to go. . . . .I am that lazy
