Hi all.

Just a little confused as to which figure to use for alkalinity when calculating CRS additions and could do with some advice.

Anglian Water report says my water has 332.25 mg/l of CaCO3, but then goes on to say that the alkalinity is 225 mg/l of CaCO3. I did a Salifert kit which more or less agreed with the 225 mg/l of alkalinity.

So which figure is the correct one to use when calculating how much CRS to add?

This choice also affects calculating the DLS addition. Anglian Water say Calcium is 133 mg/l which correlates to the higher CaCO3 figure they give (332.25 x 0.4 = 133). But if I go with the lower CaCO3 figure it's 225 x 0.4 = 90 mg/l.

Help!

Thanks in advance.

Use the test kit result as the water company report is (I believe) an average over a period of time.
Although you'll need quite a bit of CRS to get down to a good alkalinity for pale ales.
