As SWMBO doesn't like the taste of our water she buys bottled water. I have found out there is no fluoride in it so that just leaves the chlorine and chloramines to take out.

I have thought about buying a water distiller but now we know fluoride is not the problem I don't think it is worth it.

I have looked at carbon filters, as I will be using quite a lot of those so wanted a type where the filter itself was cheapest. This turned out to be the cylindrical 10" type.

Flow rate is great, but the container is quite large.

I will not be plumbing this in permanently, but using hozelock connectors and using it when needed.

My worry is that when it is stored it will start to grow mould or bacteria between uses. Do you think this is a problem or should it be flushed through each use or taken apart and dried between uses?

I got one of these kits years ago...

You just need to bore a single hole near your sink, fit the filter to the wall under the sink somewhere (two self tappers) and use the wee gizmo think to connect to a cold water pipe (no plumbing skills required). Honestly, could not be easier, even for the DIY challenged!

The separate tap means we only use it for drinking water (and home brew of course!) and I change filter once a year for ~£15. Been doing this for 10+ years I reckon, in fact, I had to replace the tap few years back as wore the old one out :-?

The bulk of issues with water bacterial growth is where it is affected by air, heat or light, eliminate those 3 things and a sanitising wash before use and you should be good. Best scenario i can think of offhand for frequent use (every few weeks) would be to cap (plumbing stop ends, mechanical or push fit) the ends of the filter whilst it is full of fresh tap water (assuming chlorinated) and keep it in a fridge.

I have one of these plumbed in to the water supply feeding the brewing sink ...

I used one on our boat for eight years filling up the one ton water tanks as and when we found a tap at the side of the French, Dutch, Belgian or German canal.

I changed the cartridge out ...

... at the beginning of every summer and as no-one suffered any ill effects I presume that they work very well indeed.

I recommend that you fit one of these upstream of the filter ...

... because mains water pressure is often above the maximum operating pressure (4.2bar) of the filter.
