Just done my 5th brew in my Brew Devil. Each time, i have used protofloc 10-15 mins before end of the boil. I get heavy coagulation during the old break and this in turn clogs the filter on the drain tap as i empty to fermenter. Am i using too much protofloc (1 tablet) or does everyone else syphon when it has all settled to the bottom. i have ended up scraping the filter with the paddle and of course it all goes through into the fermenter. End product has always been fine - just think i might be missing something!!

@Ow do!
My kettle finings are granulated - (can't remember whether it's Protofloc) - so I can easily vary the amount.
I don't use a filter on the drain tap. I use a hop spider during the boil and allow the break material to flow into the FV.

I use half a tablet.... no type of filter on the tap. I just put a steel plate under the boiler propped up with a bit of wood, so that the tap is angled upwards slightly. When the boiler is switched off, all the gunk settles to the opposite side of the tap. As the boiler empties it gets lighter so the block can be carefully removed and the boiler can be returned to a level position - all the crap stays under the level of the tap... nothing gets into the FV.

Hi!
What size is your piece of wood?
Any chance of the specs - maybe a blueprint?

:laugh8:

Lol! It's 1" x 2" x 10". I'm already googling 'Patents Office'. But seriously.... I should have added that I use hop pellets - using leaf would probably form a layer above tap level, thus rendering my state-of-the-art technique useless.

Ok thats sorted then. 1/2 a protofloc instead of a whole one, remove the outlet filter, as i use a hop spider and prop the boiler up on a piece of angle iron to avoid copyright issues. Roll on next brew day!! Thanks
