I've got a big harvest of apples from my one apple tree, and I'm not a cider drinker, so I thought that making apple wine would be the best use for them. There are of course plenty of recipes out there, but as I have a good sized juicer I was wondering if, for simplicity, I could juice up a few litres from the apples and then use that as the basis for a WOW, using WGJ and the usual additives. Any thoughts?

You may not be able to find WGJ its as rare as rocking horse ****e at the moment, you could try red grape juice which most supermarkets have to make a Rose wine.

I've got a few cartons of WGJ in stock from a trip to Waitrose, or indeed I could use the red stuff, I was really wondering if I'd need to treat the juiced apples, Campden tabs or pasteurising or similar, or whether I could just use them as I would when making a normal apple juice WOW.

The only place that sell it at the moment is Waitrose. I have checked all over, Tesco, Lidl, Asda, Sainsburys, etc but the only one that has it constantly in stock is Waitrose. Not cheap though, the price was bumped up to about £2.75 for 1 litre, if I remember correctly.

EDIT - Ah I see you found it there already.

As for the apple juice, you can use campden tablets to pasteurise the juice before using it but you need to let it sit for 24 hours before pitching yeast. I do this when making fruit wines, instead of using heat so that I do not get the cooked fruit taste. If you have the Young's tablets then it does say, on the back of the tube, how many to add per gallon to pasteurise. I think it is 1 tab per gallon and let it sit for 24 hours then pitch yeast.

Great, thanks for the info, I'll treat a batch with CTs. They are quite tart cooking apples, but I've made some over-sweet wines using White Grape and Peach Juice, so they might complement each other well.

I've also used Kedem White Grape juice for WOWs, which is currently on offer in Sainsburys. 1.75 for 650ml. Works very well, and you can re-use the bottle.
