is there a way to judge the amount of water to underlet a mash with

like say when it just seeps to the grain top
I have no way of telling how much water has come from the HLT
and as its too near the shed roof cant use a dip stick

Can you not fill the hlt with the correct volume of water, heat, then use it all?

you need to calibrate your HLT and mark it with how many litres at intervals ( a bit like a jug ).

Then subtract how much is left from how much was in originally and it will give you how much is in the mash :)

How do you know how much water has come from your HLT when you do not underlet?

I would add a sight tube to your HLT and calibrate, makes it very easy then :thumb:
