Twist top wine bottles any good?

Been saving lots of wine bottles for my home brew wine and saving the corked ones only.

Any ideas if the screw tops can be corked? Just tried with one and it seems a snug fit.

i've been using them Chris and no probs. I just buy and use bigger corks in them as the ones i've got have slightly wider necks. very occassionally i get one which seems to want to push out a cork as soon as its gone in, even ttho the fit seems good. i have some screw tops which i keep for such occassions and use both, lol a cork and a screw top, belt and braces stylee. sometimes i puncture the screw top so that the cork can still breathe as normal. dunno how much difference it makes?

On the other forum it has been said that corking screw top bottles is bad practice. The main reason is that the top of the bottles are thinner and are prone to cracking because they are not as thick as normal wine bottles.

You can re-use them with the screwcap but if you approach any landlord in your area, they will gladly give you 'propper' ones for free. 99% of pub bottles are thrown away nowadays so what you take from them saves the pub on disposal costs.

If you don't fancy approaching the local pub, try freecycle or ask friends and neighbours to save there empties, you will be surprised what you will come up with.

When you are opening a bottle for friends or neighbours, it always looks much more professional in a decent wine bottle.

Yeah, I got about a hundred 1L bottles from a local taverna, that's 2 weekends worth. The owner said he just throws the rest in a council provided recycling bin, which he's not paid for.

I use some screw tops for WOW that I know won't hang around. After 1 or 2 uses the thread loosens, so I have got past this by putting cling film underneath. As these bottles don't hang about not so bothered what they look like. Any better wines ket corked in proper bottles.

I was reading that it is back pressure that pops the cork straight back out so the dodge round it is - put in a length of strong string or wire down the inside when inserting the cork, leave enough to get a good hold on the string, then slowly withdraw the string and the excess pressure "follows" the string. Not tried it meself but it may be worth a shot for someone.

Ah, this is something i did not anticapate.

ive been collecting wine bottles for ages myself and from friends and 99% are screw tops, which i plan on corking!! I mainly dring ozzy,kiwi or SA wines and nearly all are screw top!

Hi Spun, corking screw tops is fine, just take it easy as they are not as strong as corked bottles.I have corked hundreds and not had a prob. : ken
