Would it be ok to use a syringe? instead of a turkey baster, its just i can get syringes for free, thanks.

no problem unless its a 5 ml one and then you will be there for ages.
Whatever you choose, keep it for brewing only and sterilise it well and often

You can pick Turkey Basters up quite cheap. Mine was only £4 from my local cookshop. Worthy investment. 2 squirts and the trial jar is full..

If you can get a big one, then go for it. You are going to need to draw out about 250mls depending on your hydrometer testing jar. As PD says, steralise first. I use a 10ml syringe to measure 2 part liquid finings, but a turkey baster to draw samples.

Bloody Hell! I've seen them for 49p in Wilkinson's but I've got a good one now, and think that might have cost 99p.

To Colsa: A range of syringes can be very useful, I use 2.5ml for measuring Videne and Kwik Clear finings and 10ml for a strong metabisulphite solution I use in place of Campden tablets. I've only ever had one 50ml for drawing test samples but found that seized up after a few washings so I'm back to the turkey baster.

Even better if you have a regular source and can break a fresh one out of sterile packaging each time :thumb:

Don't forget......

When you sterilise a turkey baster remember to swill the solution inside the rubber bulb each time.

Agreed, take the thing apart and disinfect bulb and tube, inside and out.

I got a baster for about 4 pounds from home sense. (owned by tk maxx I think)
Best thing is its stainless steel with a silicone buld. Great for cleaning with boiling water.

ooh a shiny turkey baster..... have to look out for one of them.... :D

thanks guys, i didn't realise a turkey baster was only a few quid, i thought they would be like £14.99 or something, thanks again, will pick one up next time im down the high street :thumb:
