Well no one saw that coming, i guess when threatened the best way to handle it is call their bluff and it has worked the bigger bully may just win this one.


(CNN)President Donald Trump has agreed to meet with North Koreanleader Kim Jong Un, the White House announced, setting the scene for an unprecedented encounter between two nations that only recently threatened to wipe each other out.

The meeting, which would be the first between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader, will take place by May, according to South Korea's national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, who delivered the invitation to Trump after a visit by his delegation to Pyongyang earlier this week.
Trump's decision to meet Kim, after a year in which the two have repeatedly traded insults, is a remarkable breakthrough -- albeit one with uncertain consequences. It brings the North Korean regime close to its long-desired aim of recognition on the international stage, and it offers Trump the tantalizing prospect of a historic diplomatic victory.
The South Korean delegation, which landed in Washington, D.C. for a debriefing Thursday on the North-South talks, was careful to praise Trump's influence over the developments. Chung said the US President's "leadership" and his administration's pressure on the North Korean regime had "brought us to this juncture."

It certainly levels the playing field as Kim is so upredictable too. It’s nerve wracking the thought of the two of them meeting and how it might go, but fascinating.

Kim is a lot more clever than he is given credit for. Apart from beer, North Korea is another little side hobby of mine which I have been reading up on for a number of years and I visited September last year. Just when he was sending his missiles up and testing warheads.

It was quite the opposite. Unless you were American you were pretty safe and unless you did something extremely stupid, was as safe a place I have ever visited. Ultimately a very low number of foreigners have been arrested and they were always American or South Korean for political purposes.

And some of the beer was really good. I tried 18 different NK beers in 7 days.

North Korea Confidential by Daniel Turner and James Pearson is pretty good for an up to date assessment of the country. It is pretty balanced where as most books are either dated, have a bias or poke fun at the country.

The girl with 7 names is also pretty good.

And North Korea Undercover by journalist John Sweeny is amusing.

I am not in anyway condoning the regime but they are still real people living their lives, having been taught in an extremely closeted way so they know nothing different.

It sounds like a terrifying place - I met a couple of NK defectors when I worked in Japan and it they were not complimentary.

I loved the comment made by a Canadian comedienne on the TV when Trump was on about building his wall along the Mexican border..

"I can see a day when all the Americans decide to get away from Trump and when that happens we will have to build a wall to keep them out of Canada. Luckily, Americans are so fat that it won't need to be a very high wall; something like a speed-bump will do!"

There's one element of Trump's behaviour that is totally predictable. He makes a bold statement and then at a later time adds so many "ifs" and "buts" that he begins to sound like a kid caught with his hand in mis mother's handbag!

The latest Trump turnaround has gone from "I will meet with Kim Jong Un." to "I will meet with Kim Jong Un when ......" and there then follows a list as long as your arm as to what must happen before the meeting can take place!

Most of the list involves Kim Jong Un effectively bowing down to Trump so it probably won't happen!
