Without trucks you get nothing. And most big rig drivers drive to a higher standard than your average motorist.
We have a bit of a bad reputation which is not helped by the type of drivers we have all seen overtaking each other on the motorway for two miles which is often commented on when you tell someone what you do for a living.

The problem with a lot people that have never driven class 1 for a living, or any large vehicle for that matter, is they have no idea what it entails.

In fact, I find a growing number of people just generally, are pretty intolerant of anything that is is outside of their life experience bubble.

Spot on, I don't remember them changing the highway code to say don't wait at a side road ignore oncoming traffic and do as you please but apparently the have.

what i don't get is, we have spent billions on smart 4 lane motorways to ease congestion and we now have hgvs trying to overtake each other in 3 lanes for mile after mile, what a total waste of money

My bizarre totally unworkable plan is this.... a lot of trucks are speed limited plus some are full and slow. take off the speed limiter and introduce random limits which flash up in the cab. A couple of overhead cameras and if it detects lorries in lane 3 or 4 they instantly become limited to 40. The roads are obviously not screwed up quite enough yet , I think this will do the trick.

Speed limiters are there for a reason as are the reduced speeds truck are supposed to do on certain roads you really wouldn't want 40 ton trucks being allowed to do whatever speed they wanted a flashing speed limit in the cab is as easy to ignore than a speedometer.

I was being sarcastic chippy, given the governments really great idea of smart motorways ,no hard shoulders on busy stretches, because they are busy asad. I thought it was the public's duty to come up with crap ideas for our roads.

I shouldn’t worry, Liz Truss is doing away with them if they are not working. Since they don’t appear to be, I’m assuming they will fade away.
For smart motorways to work safely, there is a requirement for smart drivers. I think that’s where it’s going wrong.

I got that but thought those that don't know how we have to drive differently woukd be interested ;)

That exactly. Most people have no idea of the extra requirements and limitations that a large vehicle has. In an ideal world, no one should be able to drive a car until they’ve driven a truck and ridden a motorcycle.

Well that's me qualified m/c 42 years and no off's or broken bones a few near misses with blind cagers and a lot of french, never been done for speeding don't ask how and nil points, in my early years one of my mates his dad was a traffic cop and he told us to get pulled you need to be doing something others are not and that stuck with me, do i drive fast of coarse i do when conditions are right

I drove trucks for over 20 years. I think everyone who passes a driving test should be taken out in a truck and experience what it's like. Then do an emergency stop with a full load. That will scare the Sh*t out of them.
Normal car drivers have no idea. Driving a truck is a skill.

Hitched all over the country in my skint youth thanks to the generosity and kindness of many truckers, met some really interesting people, never had any problems and got to see a side of life/country most have no clue about. Difficult job!
