Thanks for so many answers, esp as they all seem to agree. I like the idea of using a cut glass crystal bud vase - dead posh, but probably woudn't get it past the missus.....
I'd never thought about drinking a fermenting brew - but I'm certainly up for it!

I'll have to see if I've got something I can press into service. I'm aiming for brewday #2 on Sunday
 
Makes it much easier to read your hydrometer. I`ve acquired a 60ml medical syringe to use as a thief, no air blown into beer that way like you risk with a baster
 
You should taste your brew through the fermenting cycle. It'll help you get to grips with what is happening during fermenting. Pro brewers can tell how far the ferment has gone by a taste or a quick sniff.
