A Trappist beer that doesn't often get mentioned is La Trappe which is a shame because I think the quad is fantastic, and the limited edition oak aged batches are divine. I have a bottle of batch 20 in the cupboard which I'm keeping for the Christmas period :drink:

Yes, I have a friend who lives in Holland and he is very proud of La Trappe and make sure sure we sink one or two whenever we visit. I think I’ve only had the dubbel, also lovely.

For those who want to try these beers BeerofBelgium.com have an (unsurprisingly) great selection of belgian beer of all varieties. The only drawback is the shipping is a bit pricey at £8 - 10 and fluctuates with the exchange rate. I've compared them to BeersofEurope which do a broader selection of styles but they are more expensive and have a lot of things out of stock regularly. BoB does a 12 bottle trappist selection pack for 30 euros or can buy individually. For those feeling flush they also regularly stock Westvleteren 6, 8 and 12 for 12 euros a bottle. :-o I have to admit I did splash out on a 12 since it's such a rare beer, it is very good, but not really worth 4 - 6 times the price of the others.

A British trappist brewery would be interesting, as someone else said there's nothing to say they'd brew something similar to the Belgians is there? Could easily do a Trappist bitter, although that might be a bit of a missed opportunity.

Yes La Trappe are good. Second the point on Westvleteren quality and price, even though the beers are excellent. Not Trappist but worth a look are De Struise Pannepot and Pannepeut.

Anyone tried any of the newer breweries. Zundert? Tre Fontane? I've only had the IPA from Spencer so far, which was nice. And Gregorius when it was first released, it had a strange black olive note to it, need to try it again.

Oh now you're talking
Probably the best beer I've ever had was a 7 year old bottle of Pannepot in Delirium Café, absolutely incredible stuff. Struise also do a glorious 13% imperial stout called Black Albert which is also in my top 10.
All this talk of Belgian beer is making my mouth water, luckily I'm going back to Brussels in January :D
