Trappist brewery to open in England

I love that there's an international trappist association when there's only 12 breweries in the world that can produce trappist beer.

Exciting stuff though, be nice to have some decent British Trappist beer!
 
This is weird...I remember an episode of Jamie and Jimmy's Food Fight where British beers took on Belgians and I was positive that one of the categories was Trappist. They only had one British beer to choose from in that category.

On googling, I remembered correctly BUT the beer was Ampleforth Abbey Beer which is an Abbey not a Trappist beer. Seems like they were very vague with the definitions (for TV entertainment purposes) as Britain didn't actually have a beer to put in this category!

So, if this happens, it will be Britain's first Trappist beer
 
An odd twist on Trappist brewing, that they'll have to fund and build a roof before brewing beer to sell.

Will be interesting to taste what they produce, and whether it matches some of the good Abbey beers produced already in this country. Trappist certification isn't a badge of quality, something that comparing Chimay and St Bernardus highlights.

Chimay Blue and White are beautiful beers.

Doesn't do it for me. Actually if I was to pick a favourite Chimay it'd be the red, but the blue is probably my least favourite Trappist beer (of the ones I've tried at least).
 
Bit of an aside and may be a stupid question.......I know Trappist is a style category in and of itself but presumably a brewery with Trappist accreditation could brew any beers they like?

Choosing Chimay beers over each other, I'd probably take blue over red, and red over the tripel. However, find then all crudely done, slightly hot alcohol and a little uncomplicated and syrupy in flavour. Westmalle, Rochefort and St. Bernardus offer more for a little extra investment. And then there is Orval.

Reading an article a while ago on Trappist beers it said that for it to be allowed to be called such there had to be Trappist monks living where the beer was brewed. One of the problems they have is that there are no young people applying to join the monasteries. I mean who in their right mind would want a life of quiet contemplation, brewing and drinking beer and generally not being part of the rat race, sounds awful.

Can't have sex, though. Hence, no young men join.

I love both Chimay Red and Chimay Blue and less keen on Chimay White, absolutely love Westmalle Dubbel and I'm jealous of you having tried Roquefort, St Bernardous and Orval. :smile:

I've only had Chimay Blue and Westmalle Dubbel but I agree with your comments. There's definitely more malt complexity and less obvious alcohol in the Westmalle. I do like the yeast imparted flavour in Chimay though, but personal preference I guess.

Mmm...Brother Myqul does have a certain ring to it (those skirts they wear, might get caught up in my bike chain though)
