I have found that Morrisons sell non-honeyed puffed wheat. Can that be used as Torrefied Wheat? :wha:
Thanks
Graham

Sorry pakman but torrified wheat is the devils food   unless you like your beer to taste like shredded wheat.

Wheat malt is far better. :thumb: :thumb:

Thanks for that info graysalchemy!
I was under the impression that Torrefied Wheat added to the boil was a method of improving the head on a lower carbonated ale. No-body mentioned the taste. Does wheat malt do the same for the head?

It does indeed, and like GA I also don't like the taste I found torrified wheat added :thumb: I guess there is some personal preference in there though

On one brew I "torrefied" my own wheat in a popcorn maker. It worked well and although there is a slightly wheaty taste I wouldn't describe it as shredded wheat like. the head retention was good.

Is that not when it becomes terrified wheat ?

Shredded Wheat is probably a bit of an over exaggeration but certainly sugar puffs. :thumb:

Murrays (A craft brewery here in Oz) is said to use either Torrified Wheat or Flaked Wheat in their Whale Ale with good results.
I used to use Torrified in my Belgian Wits until my supplier switched over to Flaked which is better IMHO.
My grain bill for a Whale Ale clone is 50% Pale Ale, 25% Wheat Malt, 25% Flaked or Torrified & is hopefully close that of Murrays WA which is a VERY tasty drop. :drink:

It is used by a lot of commercial breweries over here as well, probably because it is cheap.

Noooooooooooooooooo!

Add it to the mash, grains should NEVER BUT NEVER be boiled!!!!!!!!!!

And in the case of torriefied wheat, bypass the mash tun and put it directly in the rubbish bin

I was donated a little of it  . I use wheat malt in my granary bread baking and even though I have previously said I wouldn't use it for that, I haven't any wheat malt in and I am baking tomorrow so I will have to resort to the torrified wheat
