Hello Chaps

I have just started a new brew of Tom Caxton best bitter. I have done a few of the Tom Caxton real ale kits which have all been fantastic (especially for the price) so just want to see if any of you have done the best bitter kit and also how it turned out, I have made the kit with 1kg of brown sugar (as xma is coming up so cant keep splashing out on enhancer/spray malt ect)!!

I just finished drinking this kit and it really wasn't bad at all. For mine, I used 1kg of Geordie beer kit enhancer, 250g of unrefined golden cane sugar, the entire hops sachet, and Munton's Premium Gold yeast instead of the under-the-lid rubbish. My OG was 1.044 and my final gravity was a rather high 1.012 for an ABV of 4.2%. I bottled and primed with just a bit less than half a teaspoon of priming sugar per 500ml bottle, as I was aiming for a less carbonated ale.

If I were to do it again, I'd use half the hops sachet (personal taste), and use 250g additional light dry spraymalt, as the final product was just slightly on the syrupy side (I assume from the cane sugar). The bottles had just the right amount of carbonation for a bitter and the poured pints had a lovely, firm head on them.

So yes, I liked the kit and would do it again. Good luck with yours! Hope it turns out well!

Have done a TC Dark Ale, which has turned out well, not tried the best bitter yet but reckon you should be more than fine with the brown sugar, I've used muscovado sugar before in some of my winter brews, well worth a try for a deeper flavour. The TC was recommended by the guy at the local brew shop and he said "Don't let the packaging put you off", he was right! Let us know how this one goes! :thumb:
