You must be psychic Screamlead. While pondering over rats in bed this morning I'd thought of that, I was just wondering if I might end up poisoning our cats with an easy to catch rat if either I or the council poison.
Think I'll just get an old fashioned snappy rat trap, bait it with some peanut butter (works great for mice so I presume it will for rats) and stick it on top of the compost

If the council do it and you tell them you have pets they should put the bait in tamper proof boxes.

That's ok until your cat catches and eats the poisoned rat.

Very true sir... didnt think of that one!!! Scribble out my previous coment i was talking sh*t. Trap sounds like the best idea or an air rifle!

The big rat taps are impressive, just don't get your fingers caught in it!

Quite true. ;)
They are quite clever and don't like traps, can take some catching.
You can get an electronic type, a sort of tunnel, that you can tip the kill out of, if you are squemish.
Food on a compost heap or spent grain is asking for them to come around. ;)
Any which way, get ride asap, you don't want em around. :)

I'm quite keen on getting an air rifle and giving the rats a spot of lead poisoning (another toy, woohoo!) but I hardly ever see the buggers. Do you have to lay some bait and snipe 'em?

We've had a problem with rats in the loft space, so we got a couple of sonic deterrents, they seem to have worked a treat. They act a bit like those things that were supposed to keep kids away from gathering around shops, but they actually work.

The "Mosquito".... and they dont work because the kids make so much noise they cant hear it

What does work is undesirable music. If you ever have the misfortune to go through Vauxhall tube station, you may notice they play classical music pretty loud. And because loud classical music isnt cool, the local scrotes and toerags keep well clear.

Not all us "scrotes and toerags" dislike classical, I quite like it  But the things we have do seem to have worked, not heard the rats for a good while now.

Stay quiet and keep your head down,
The enemy are over there.
I’ve been watching them for hours,
And they are simply unaware.
They’ve been breaking into the food stores
Whenever they get the chance,
They’re like a festering pustule,
And this boil I’m going to lance.

Keep quiet; get your head down,
One’s looking over this way.
Don’t even move a muscle,
You’ll give the game away.
Good, he hasn’t seen us,
He’s gone back to join his mate.
But soon I’ll make my move,
Pushing daisies is his fate.

I raise my trusty rifle,
Let out a breath, relaxed and still.
Use the scope to find the quarry,
Set the crosshairs for the kill.
Slowly squeeze the trigger,
Feel the kick as the lead is spat.
Finally I got him!
I killed the bloody RAT!!

;)

You can get a humane trap on eBay that you bait with peanut butter rats can't resist that !! Drive a few miles away from your house and let it go but if one rat has come to you probably more will come so maybe keeping traps set is the best idea or it's fun shooting them as well

Traps has got to be the way to go, poison is a slow death. :)
Where will they go to die, ...................back of the shed maybe, you wlll know they are there if they do ;)

Catch the rat, put it in a sack, beat it with a stick, tie a brick to the sack, throw the sack in the river

And by the time you have done that it's mate will have raised another 10

Love the idea of an air rifle

I obtained a deep plastic barrel with a smooth sides and placed a little grain in the bottom. The rats dive in after the grain and get trapped as they are unable to scrabble up the steep smooth sides. They are then easily dispatched with a swift shovel shot.
Top method involving no poison, guns or dangerous spring loaded traps.

There's some good tips on you tube for all sorts of traps and tricks, have a look you'll definitely find a solution in there

second the barrel, is amazing how many mice we caught when we left a bit of birdseed in a bucket in the garage overnight, dont want to leave too long/forget about it or u end up with just one big fat one and some serious guilt
