The Thornbridge/Brew UK/Waitrose home brew competition is back, closing date 31st July 2017.

The Winner will receive £250 and have their beer brewed at Thornbridge and sold in a selection of Waitrose Stores.

I might give this a go if my NEIPA turns out decent. They tend to like experimental beers for this though don't they? A rose petal Witbier won last year and a rhubarb saison the year before IIRC

Only having completed 3 all grain brews since coming over from kits I think I might have to give a miss this year, maybe next year. Although I do think the brews I have done have been prety awesome

I may stick something in, sadly you don't get any feedback from this comp, which is a shame considering the experience of the judging panel.

Feedback is always useful as family and friends are always too polite / don't know enough about beers to really give constructive criticism.

There, fixed that for you. Cynical? Me? Never!

Interesting. Perhaps I can do a Black IPA V3 for this. Might chuck some raspberry in for a twist. They do like their twists.

Bugger that for a laugh, if you win you'll be asked to give your recipe to Thornbridge.

If your beer is chosen by Waitrose for national distribution then the winning brewer will be asked to give their recipe to Thornbridge

So what? It doesn't stop you from brewing or sharing it.

Have to laugh, and the commercial value of a homebrew recipe without a brewery to produce it, and a chain of retail outlets to sell it, is?

The 2014 winner is an ex-member of our homebrew club, ex-member, as it landed him the career move into professional brewing that he was after. The rewards aren't always obvious.

By winning the competition the recipe now has value after all they want it. These sort of competitions are prevalent in photography too but now it's got to the point where media outlets approach photographers (professionals included) and ask them to use their work for free!

I'm pretty sure the brewers at Thornbridge aren't stuck for recipes ideas though. Photography does largely depend on being in the right place at the right time.

I get what your saying, about Thornbridge not needing recipes and the a recipe is nothing without a brewery to produce it and a chain of outlets to distribute it but the cynic in me just wonders why both Waitrose and Thornbridge are doing this.

The comp pre-dates Waitrose's involvement so I guess they're just the new sponsors and get a unique product on the shelves. As for Thornbridge, I don't know their motive, but they have always been supportive of homebrewing, particularly their production manager Dom who has given time and knowledge to homebrew clubs.

I find alot of brewers are supportive of homebrew as many cut their teeth doing it. These types of comps are common (perhaps not as big as this one) and I recently won one myself and brewed my beer commercially for a festival.

I guess I'm just suspicious of large companies motives. But your right many head brewers of breweries started out as homebrewers and just want to give something back
