The difference between wine and cider?

Does anyone know the technical difference between wine and cider? :wha:
Is it even possible to define them apart?

Somebody else asked the same question quite recently, but I can't find the link or remember who answered it.

Quite simply, HM Customs say it ceases to be cider when it passes 8.5% alcohol by volume.
