... yuhp.

Edit: I was drunk and feeling slightly facetious yesterday (sorry about that), so I thought I'd add a proper reply.

Firstly, you've avoided the question. You've not logically demonstrated that they are different, you've just asserted that they are and thrown a red herring in there.

I maintain that killing someone does not suddenly become ok because the government has said so.

Secondly, the situation you point to simply isn't equivalent. You locking someone in a basement against their will for your own gain isnt equivalent to locking someone in prison, and imprisonment isn't equivalent to killing someone. Its a false equivalence.
I was starting to think I was being trolled. As I stated in my 1st post on here I don't think the death penalty is right, but I do see a state convicting someone to death for a crime after a trial is morally different to general murder even if its not justified.

........

Edit: I was drunk ...........

.........

I was going to Post "I find that hard to believe." but then I thought someone might think I'm being serious!:gulp:

........... I would actually doubt my ability to do it .....

Not really a "revenge" situation but I once had a real problem with a person handing out threats of what he would do to me if I persisted in seeing this particular lady.

My Mum picked up on the fact that I was worried about something and asked me why. I explained and her immediate response was "If he attacks you, kill him! People like him never learn from court orders and the like!" It was as if a load had been lifted from my shoulders. If I had to do anything then I could tell a judge that my family had approved my actions.:thumb:Pushed far enough, I think just about anyone is capable of massive violence. Luckily for the man concerned and myself none of his threats materialised; and I began to think that maybe my family were a bunch of psychopaths!:gulp:

Nope, just debating a drunk person, though I suppose there are some similarities :laugh8:

I simply disagree that something we all agree is immoral suddenly becomes moral because a sufficiently powerful person says so. But we agree on the central point here, so let's not fall out over semantics. :cheers1:

So locking someone up for 40 plus years with no hope of ever seeing the outside world again is not barbaric, prisons are supposed to reform those that have done wrong if you give a prisoner a sentence with no chance of ever getting out he may as well be dead and I wonder how many would take that option if it was an option.

I agree with this. Prison is supposed to be about reform.

Prisoners are free to kill themselves. When a prisoner gets life, he probably offed someone else. What keeps him from doing it to himself? Because a lot of prisoners are cowards?

They don't often give out sentences that mean prisoners will die inside so they have their freedom and the rest of their lives to look forward to unlike the person/people they have killed.

Oh, on that I completely agree, if there was to be an attack on myself or a family member (or a home invasion) I would have no hesitation in protecting myself and family with any force needed. In the moment humans (like animals) should react as required.
