I Have been making extract brews for about 6 months now and I have decided I want to take the step to all grain. I am converting my ASDA cool box over the coming week and making a wort chiller. One of my favourite parts of brewing is designing the recipes so AG will give me more options to play with.

How much cheaper is it to brew with grain over extract?

Hi and well done for going ahead with the change , AG is a lot cheaper (not including pots etc) if you bulk buy say 25kg bag of grain cost around £25 depending what and where (poss cheaper ) and you might use 5kg of grain so not including hops and yeast (which you prob was using anyway) your looking at £5 for material maybe £10 max with special grains etc plus yeast and hops so way cheaper and best of all better and nicer beer , when you went from kits to extract well this is about the same jump and don't forget liquid yeast is also another jump up and if you split the yeast in a large starter etc it is cheaper than dried yeast :thumb:

Thanks guys,

Yeast is my next adventure I use a lot of safale 05 and want to have an ongoing supply of this instead of paying £3.60 a pop at my LHBS can I keep topping up the yeast starter with DME and water?

some say not to with dried yeast others say yes but with liquid you can use 500g of dme and use 8 pints of boiled cooled water into a demi and leave for around 5 days (giving you an og of 1040) then after complete mix wort and yeast well in demi and syphon
into 12 bottles (cheap water bottles will do around 330 to 500ml etc ) now each 1 is ready to make a yeast starter (keep in fridge till ready to use , remove from fridge a few hours before use and make a starter 2 days before brewing with around 1 pint of water and 100g of dme plus yeast) Then when you are down to your last few you can wash the yeast deposit from your latest brew and make more (around 4 vials) yeast starters (you can do this around 5 ish times) so instead of £6.50 for 1 liquid yeast it can be around 15/20p plus dme (or better still instead of dme , saved frozen wort from previous brews )

i really feel i am missing out here.....im drinking 2 of my brews since starting in early april, im happy with one of them..mixed about another but its early, you know what its like trying to keep your mitts off of beer :whistle: ...is going from kits to extract a logical step or better to just go straight to AG...i am going to go all grain but i want to do it in an outbuilding i have plans to build so i am a while away yet...so much to learn it seems..is it a lot more jumble and mess to do extract as opposed to kits ?...im thinking this will wet me before the AG

THe best way to learn is to do it!
The choice is yours, but I would recommend starting with simple kit before graduating to an all shiney, pumped setup.
You will develope your own ways and "gizmos" for doing things as time progresses.
I've been AG brewing since 83 and am still doing little mods and tweaks.
