BBC radio Orkney did a small piece on home brewing on 15th Feb as part of their Island Fayre February program. Yours truly agreed to be interviewed. :hmm:
Radio Orkney has a facebook page so you can spot THBF tankard there..

Here's a link to their pic page Radio Orkney Facebook, but note that only the brewing ones are for the brewing segment

It was only a 6minute segment :( so I didn't get to expand on how easy it is to brew or how it would be great to have an Orkney, or Holm, home brew club.

Holm!?! That's where my grandad was from. Must, must, must get back up there soon...

Well done, my daughter was asked on to BBC Essex a few years back because of her local Mums forum, they now seem to invite her in whenever they need an opinion on kids or parenting. It's done her or her forum no harm. So you might get a call ever time they are talking about the demon drink. Am I right in thinking your part of the world is dry on Sundays, if so home brewing might catch on.

Many parts of Orkney were totally dry only a few generations ago, and Holm I believe was one of the last to get a pub.
But to answer your question, :D NO... we are not dry on Sundays :D :thumb:

You might be thinking of the Western Isles?

Out of interest where to? I know the South Wales valleys (I live in the Rhondda) were completely dry on Sundays once upon a time but it seems to be just about the only pass time around here with the local youths (and stealing cars).

I was living in Bangor in 82/83 which was dry then (Only place to get a drink was the students union) then in 83/4 we had the vote to repeal Sunday closing . . . which opened the pubs on a Sunday

It was around Snowdonia early 1970's a Transit van full of us went there for Easter. In those days pubs opened at 7 o'clock Sunday evenings. We were camping down the road from a pub, in the middle of nowhere, when it got to 10 past we started banging on the door to be told the nears open pub was in the next county  . So we had to drive to the first pub over the county border to the first pub we could find as did what seem a large proportion of the county. Be interested to hear from Welsh members if anywhere is still like that now.

Bayview on the main road is the house I remember from my childhood holidays, my granddad's sister lived there with their son (worked for Flett the builder in Holm, doubt they're still there) and his wife who ran the Toab post office out of the house.

Real proper memories of building rafts out of oil drums and old doors in the bay. Cockles from the sandi sands. Massive rats and a black widow catapult in the rocks on the shore at stembister - never hit a single one...

...I love Orkney. Was born and raised in Perth yet it feels like home.

The pub in my village still shuts in the afternoons til 5pm and early on sundays  Took a bit of getting used to after living in essex for 30years where you can get a drink all hours

My 'local' is closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday!!

Although Microwaved 'Meals' for 3.99, calsberfostersmiths and big screen sports is not a big draw for me

I remember going away for a few days to north Humberside (5 miles or so out of Hull) last year and was astounded to find that pubs close for the afternoon  . . . and open later on a sunday :wha: So it's not just Wales that has 'proper' opening hours. At least no in Wales it is legal to open on a Sunday should the land lord choose to do so . . . any one doing so before the early 80's risked loosing their licence
