Took the MiL and her cat for that last trip today. Very sad. The cat was 17 though, which isn't bad, and got to leave before things became too painful.
We're all having a whisky (or 3) as a goodbye toast. Actually the MiL's having about half a bottle, she drinks a bottle in 5 days anyway.
Must be hard on a vet, having to be the one to euthanise so many animals.

That's very sad. As you said, no more pain now. Vets must be very thick skinned proffessionals. Hats off to them

Sorry to hear this bud, but 17 was a grest age!

Hope you're both ok, it was the worse decision I ever helped make for my dog.

There's a relatively high incidence of drug abuse (what with the easy access) and suicide among vets (4x ordinary peeps, 2x doctors/dentists), due to the stress.

Yup

Its always the hardest decision to make, but the right one. No more suffering. Words don't help though, I've been there enough times lately. Have another Scotch then at least you might sleep tonight.

You mean worst as in "horrible to have to do" rather than "got it wrong", I hope!
With my own cats, it's always been left until it's obvious - in their state I'd want somebody to give me that injection.
Today, I wasn't sure until the vet said if we didn't do it then, 98% sure we'd be doing it a week later. Was better really, not leaving it until it was too nasty for the cat

Oh, well, wasn't my cat, so no biggie. My son's a bit torn up but sleeping OK - just empathising and remembering when our Felix went. We were sort-of hiding the gory details for that one but he looked out of his bedroom window and saw me digging the grave...

Never a pleasant task even if it wasn't your cat, but the final service any pet owner pays their animals.

When I saw you say that you'd taken MIL and her cat to the vet for the last visit I did wonder if you'd just flown back from Switzerland though.

im very sorry to here about your about your vet visit ......
i was so gutted when i had to have put george down ...

i cryed for ages and george was only a budgie...

bud hay he was the world to me ...

regards mick may .. :hat: ..

Sorry to hear about this OB. As pet owners we know we are going to face these decisions but it doesn't make it any easier when it comes.

Sorry to hear :(

As to vets being thick skinned? Not all...

I was second appointment yesterday to bring my dogs boosters up to date. Previous appointment left without their pet in floods of tears.

There was a significant lull between them leaving and me going in to see the vet. I found him clearly upset which led us to have a bit of a chat.

After 12 years of practising he still finds himself in pieces along with the owners.

Hope the MiL copes ok with her loss.

Yep, the first way is the way I ment it. He was 16, getting quite deaf and blind, and it got to the point where after 2 minutes in the garden his back legs would go and had to try and carry him back inside the house.

We had to have OH's Welsh Springer ,Merlin, PTS last Friday , he had chronic spinal arthritis and was in much pain even with being administered Tramadol .
I never liked him , but I was close to tears to see him so peaceful and out of his misery, I'm not sure what I'll be like when I lose Elllie,my 10 years old ,ESS , she's the best dog I've ever had.

My old vet in Worcester was nicknamed Trigger ,because he used to be the vet at Worcester Racecourse.

Bit difficult trying to convince the kid the pet ran away to join the circus after that eh? :)
