Americans love to shout about how you can’t change their constitution (especially the 2nd amendment) as if they don’t actually know what the word “amendment” means!
I say you can have the guns you want, per the constitution, but they have to be the guns that were available in the 1700s: single shot muzzle loaders.

Canada has a greater number of guns per head of pop. but dont suffer the same madness as in the USA.
I believe that Switzerland has the biggest number of guns per head in Europe and suffer the highest suicide rate
by a bullet - there's something much deeper going on in the US

Then the 1st Amendment protection of Free Speech doesn't apply to the internet- only to printing technology of 1789. 4th Amendment protection of privacy from search and seizure does't apply to computers or cell phones....

If they did not have a gun ,they would just use something else , a car for one ? What is it that there are so many severely mentally deranged people in the states to make them want to execute children ?

These school shootings make me sick, Chicken sh@# cowards. The US is very large and has a diverse population. Big cities, large stretches of wilderness, the Great Plains, mountains, deserts, swamps you name it. Also many very different cultures. To make comments about the whole country is insulting and chick sh@# and to turn this tragedy into left verses right is also. More mature and critical thinking is needed. I live west of a big city on the Great Plains in a rural area we have bobcats, foxes, coyotes and more. My daughter lives in the Ozarks with these and cougars and bears too. A friend in the Rockies has cattle to protect against predators. All gun control should be a local issue, one size does not fit all. City folks can have different laws that suit there but don't disarm those who have serious threats to life and livelihood.
Again All Gun Control should be a local issue. I don't own any AR-15 type guns but I do have guns to defend and protect my love ones and they are locked in a gun safe until needed. You asked for opinions. cheers and peace

Before 1968- you could buy a gun through the mail, or cash and carry at any hardware store in the USA. There were no shootings in schools. Guns were easier to get, then. It's not the guns- it's the culture. Children are not taught right from wrong. They are taught to feel- not think. They are not taught to value anything, nor hold dear any tradition, or have any respect for anyone but themselves. The results aren't surprising.

EDIT: Ban guns in America? Take a good look at what banning drugs has done to the USA, and tell me a gun ban would be no different- 155+ Americans die every day from fentanyl overdoses. That would be 7 mass shootings per day. No one does anything, and our southern border, where this stuff is imported, is wide open.

Comedy is great for the soul. By the way my gun safe holds my handguns and deer and ranch rifles. Different tools for different threats and hunting ,has a keyboard type combo that is fast to access.
By the way, love my new avatar.👍

It’s time to tune out of American politics for a while. I personally can’t cope with the NRA/Republican spokespeople spouting on about how it’s a mental health thing, not a 2nd amendment issue. And at the end of the day they’re actually right.

Guns don’t kill people, it’s people who say ‘Guns don’t kill people’ kill people, with guns.

And not just normal guns, it’s with legally bought semi-autoautomatic assault rifles that can be turned into military grade automatic weapons with the cut off cardboard from an Amazon box.

Laws are an extension of culture.
What a culture finds acceptable, it does not ban.
What it finds intolerable, it bans, and provides harsh punishments.
People from outside the USA constantly talk about how they “don’t understand American attitudes towards guns.”
True, and you never will.
I don’t understand many things about European countries. I understand even less about cultures that rely on arranged marriages, but, it is not my place to understand them. Simply accept them, along with the fact that my attitude doesn’t matter to those actually from that culture.

The second amendment reads:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
As a Brit and an outsider, it seems to me that this means that members of a well regulated militia have the right to bear arms.
It seems to me that the "militia" and "well regulated" words have been long forgotten over the years.
Aside from that, I would ask why this part of the constitution has not been updated since 1791 when it was ratified? Back then America was a wild place with many dangers that don't exist now.
In most western first world countries the most common cause of premature death in young people is accidents involving cars. The number of road deaths is dropping thanks to improved design and safety legislation. Only in America is this not true, where just recently death by gunshot recently overtook road accidents in the top spot.
When will the US legislate to protect their population from this danger?
Finally, if you are an American and are reading this, please be aware that the rest of the world thinks you are crazy when it comes to gun law. I was going to say laughs at you, but it's not funny.

I worked in a college & then a secondary school for 16 years, The security at both places was pretty good. I wonder how secure schools on America are?
I also grew up with guns, roughshooting & wildfowling. I was sec of our local wildfowlers club for 13 years, I cannot fathom the mindset of the perpetrators of these atrocities.
When i grew up most of us had knives but there was never any thought of fighting with them, what has happened is a wholesale breakdown in family structures & discipline. I saw this during my time at the school, each years intake seemed to be worse behaved than the one before.
I am convinced that violent video games must damage young minds, when you are blasting people apart in gory detail on screen for hours every day how can it not desensitize you to it?
Add in toxic social media & the instant availability of hardcore **** of every possible kind is it any surprise that kids get their heads screwed up?

“Well regulated” at the time of writing, meant “functioning well”
“Militia” means all citizens of fighting age.
How do I know what was intended by someone in 1789? It’s called The Federalist Papers. The notes taken by the authors, outlining their intent.
Why has it not been updated? For the same reason the 1st hasn’t been updated: we do not trust our government to update it.
Would you trust the US government?
That is why we have these guns in the 1st place. What we always ask ourselves is: what are the going to do to us, once we can’t fight back? The answer is written in the horrors of the last 2 centuries.

I took the family to a shooting range in Florida while in holiday . On the way out, similar to Disney and Universal theme park rides , you had to exit through their retail store. We stopped and were amazed at the range of weapons being sold. When I asked about any gun, the stock answer was, "In the event that your home is compromised...." It's really all about fear , they use it to sell ridiculous weapons , a hand gun which looked like a Thompson machine gun , with a big revolving magazine which contained shotgun cartridges. The sales guy said "In the event of your home being compromised, and you are not familiar with weapons , anyone standing behind you will be safe . "

Why bring religion into the debate when was the last time an arranged marriage caused 19 people to be slaughtered?

Could you enlighten us to why you need semi automatic assault rifles for pest control?

Even though we don't live in America it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that 99% of the population may be law abiding it's the 1% that have these guns that are the potential problem, as I posted earlier we have had cases where people have gone on shooting sprees but fortunately they are few and far between and the numbers are usually much lower as the reason being we have very strict gun control here and dont allow anyone other than the military to own automatic/semi automatic weapons.

The differences I cited were cultural, not religious.

semi automatic weapons are for government control. Not pests.

The USA was founded for the 99%, we do not wish to live our lives under the regulations that the 1% require.

It’s not about deer, or pests, and although it’s a consideration, it’s not about home defense- it’s about making your government listen to you:

The number one cause of deaths in children in the USA is ... guess what? Being shot 🤯😡.

Are cars dangerous? Yes, but that's not their intention, and huge amounts of things are constantly being done to make them safer. There is only one purpose for guns, and that's to kill people. It speaks volumes that gun proponents don't say "yes, guns are dangerous and we should make them safer" and always rely on the fallacious argument of "other things are dangerous too, but we don't ban them (with the exception of chocolate eggs 😂) so I should get to keep my gun"

Interesting- when car crashes were #1, it turns out, texting and driving was responsible. Did anyone campaign for phones to disable texting functions when at driving speeds? No. The sensors in the phone would do it- no additional equipment is needed, but no one cared to pass a law to stop this pointless loss of life.
Now? Ban the guns! Ban the guns!
It’s not about lives- or phones wouldn’t text at faster than walking speed.
It’s about power.
